Urinary bladder is a pouch hollow organ located in the abdominal cavity. Small tubular cells called nephrons filter the toxins from our blood and urine is then passed away by the ureter to this bladder. Urinary bladder stores the urine for some time, until it passes it through the urethra. Usually, cancers start developing in the innermost lining of the bladder. And, the cancer can sometimes even spread to muscles, and other parts of the body. The main symptoms of bladder cancer are pain in lower back, strong and frequent  urge to urinate, and painful urination.

Urinary bladder cancers can be treated if diagnosed at initial stages but it has a recurring tendency. People should follow proper checks ups and routine tests so that the chronic disease is diagnosed at earliest. The treatment method generally depends on the stage on which the cancer is diagnosed. Early stages can be treated using biological therapy, while some patients might require chemotherapy and surgery. When there are mutations in the DNA of cells, it can cause urinary bladder cancer. It grows at a quicker rate affecting the surrounding tissues as well. We should take the required preventive measures to protect ourselves from numerous harmful risk factors. Here are 5 tips to prevent bladder cancer: 

1. Drink enough water

Drinking plenty of water can be a useful tip to prevent bladder cancer. Bladder is where the toxins are stored and have to be filtered out of the blood by the kidneys. A long term exposure of the inner lining of the bladder to these harmful toxins can lead to cancer. Thus, it is important to dilute the toxins in your urine by drinking a lot of water. Do not hold your urine and drink enough fluids throughout the day.  

2. Eat fruits and vegetables 

As per a few studies, a healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables can help in preventing bladder cancer, but other studies have not suggested this. But, eating a healthy diet surely has several benefits, including less risk of some types of cancer. However, there is strong evidence to suggest that a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in processed meats is good for the body and can protect against bladder cancer.

3. Limit exposure to chemicals 

The factories and industries that use certain organic chemicals, put the workers and people living around at a higher risk of bladder cancer. Offices where these chemicals are mostly used include the rubber, leather, printing materials, textiles, and paint industries. If you work at a place where you might be having exposure to such harmful chemicals, make sure to follow all the work safety rules.

4. Avoid smoking

Smoking is one of the major causes of bladder cancers, which includes any type of smoking, be it cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. According to the American Cancer Society, people who smoke are three times at a higher risk of developing bladder cancer than those people who don't smoke. It is best to avoid smoking to prevent any type of cancer, including urinary bladder cancer. 

5. Report any symptoms immediately

If you experience any early symptoms of bladder cancer, then you should report it to the doctor immediately. If you get checked within time, then there is a chance of early diagnosis and treatment, if required. And, make sure to talk to your doctor if you think you are exposed to any risk factor for bladder cancer or if you have a family history of this type of cancer.
