Ahn Sung-ki’s agency confirmed he had been battling blood cancer, first diagnosed in 2019. He underwent treatment, and at one point, doctors said his cancer was in remission. However, the disease returned during follow-up checks, and he continued treatment until recently.
In late December 2025, Ahn suffered a medical emergency at home when food became lodged in his throat. He collapsed and was taken to the ICU in critical condition. Despite intensive care, his condition worsened, and he passed away days later.

Blood cancers affect the body’s blood-making tissues, including the bone marrow. They often disrupt normal blood cell production and function. Conditions like multiple myeloma, leukaemia, or lymphoma fall under this group, and they require specialised treatment such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and stem-cell transplants, depending on the type and stage.
A study published in the Journal of Haematology & Oncology explores why blood cancers are more likely to return in patients over 70. The research suggests that "immunosenescence"—the natural ageing of the immune system- makes it harder for the body to maintain long-term remission, even after successful initial therapy.
Conclusion
Ahn Sung-ki’s legacy is not just found in his 160 films, but in the way he lived his life. He was a dedicated UNICEF representative for over 30 years and a mentor to countless young artists. While his battle with cancer was long and difficult, his passion for acting never wavered. South Korea has lost a national treasure, but his contributions to global cinema will ensure that his light never truly goes out.
