Eating disorders and body image are closely linked with each other and one affects the order. The link between body image and eating disorders can be established in the following way:

  • People who have a bad body image of themselves have a higher risk of developing eating disorder and the vice-versa is also true.
  • People who have a negative body image suffer from low self esteem which often results in eating disorders. If they consider themselves to be over-weight, they try hard to lose this weight for which they decrease their appetite and develop eating disorders.
  • People who have eating disorders often perceive themselves to be over-weight and as a result create a negative body image for themselves; they do not get rid of this body image even after losing considerable amount of weight.
