When the thyroid gland is in danger, your neck swells, your muscles weaken and you feel perpetually fatigued. To be diagnosed with a thyroid condition is a nudnik because it pushes one to make lifestyle changes and its treatment is even hard to live by in the beginning. One may, however, be able to cope with it by being aware about it and its treatment course. Below mentioned are five things you need to know about thyroid conditions irrespective of whether you are suffering from one or not.
There are two main types of thyroid conditions: If you are experiencing symptoms such as sudden weight loss, increased heart rate, heat intolerance, moodiness or diarrhoea, your thyroid gland might be secreting an excess of thyroid hormones. This condition is known as hyperthyroidism. Grave’s disease, which is an autoimmune disease, has been termed as the primary cause of hyperthyroidism.

The second type of thyroid condition is hypothyroidism. It occurs when the thyroid gland fails to secrete the required amount of T3 and T4. Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include weight gain, fatigue, dry skin and hair, goitre, sensitivity to cold and depression. The signs of hypothyroidism are often confused with symptoms of other illnesses. Therefore, it is advised to consult a physician once you notice any of the aforementioned symptoms.
Diagnosis is done by checking the hormone levels : If you are suspecting any of the thyroid conditions, it’s advised to get yourself tested for it. The thyroid disease is diagnosed by determining the level of T3, T4 and TSH in your blood. If you have hyperthyroidism, your TSH level will be low and T3 and T4 will be more than the normal range. TSH is high and T3 and T4 levels are low in hypothyroidism. Normal range for TSH is considered to lie between .30 to 3.0 and for T3, it should be within 80 to 200. Normal T4 levels lie between .90 to 1.9.
Thyroid pill has to be taken once in a day: The pill consists synthetic hormones that your body requires to normalise the rate of metabolism and control fluctuating thyroid levels. After your treatment is started, the doctor will monitor thyroid levels to adjust the dose of the pill.
Metabolism normalises post thyroid pill: After being regular with your thyroid pill, you will notice improvement in the symptoms of your thyroid condition. Your metabolism rate will be balanced, thus you will find it easier to keep your weight under control. Lethargy will disappear and your energy levels will improve. To maintain your thyroid hormone levels within the normal range, watch your diet. Adhere to low-fat diet and make healthful food choices. Keep monitoring your cholesterol levels to determine the risk of heart problems to avoid risking late diagnosis.
Women are more likely to suffer from thyroid disorders than men: Women have higher chances of being diagnosed with hypothyroidism in comparison to men of their same age, however, there are no clear findings available to prove this point. Risk of hypothyroidism increases with age, thereby, one should get regularly checked for a thyroid condition after 35 years, suggest the American Thyroid Association
Though hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism requires life-long treatment, remember that you can lead a fairly normal life with it (if you religiously follow your doctor’s advice).
