It can be very tempting to get drawn into the temptation of building mass in your body with unhealthy fat. You are not looking to gain fat. You actually want to build muscles. If you stuffy yourself with pizzas, burgers, alcohol, ice-cream and other junk, they would make you fat and not lead to healthy weight gain. The distinction between healthy and unhealthy calories is critical when looking to gain weight.

  • Evaluate yourself on the BMI scale – You should measure yourself on the BMI scale and see where you stand. It will tell you the kilos you need to pile on your body. Now, track your eating habits and it is quite possible that you are overestimating the nutrition content of the amount of food you eat. Aim to gain half a kilo every week.
  • Eating for weight gain – You need to eat a balanced diet which should involve 5 to 6 meals in a day. Other than three full meals, you need to take 2 or 3 healthy snacks. The meals should include whole wheat breads, pulses, nuts, dried fruits, cottage cheese, paneer, ghee, full cream milk, fruits and vegetables.[Read: List of Weight Gain Foods]
  • Eat Nutritious Foods – Know about the nutrition various healthy foods give you. It is important that you maintain a balance between protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats in your intake. Whole wheat bread is rich in carbohydrates which you need for more energy. Nuts have 50 % healthy fats and 25 % protein. Whole milk is rich source of protein, calcium and healthy fats. Drink at least 1 liter of milk daily. Use healthy oils such as olive oil, mustard oil and coconut oil in your salads or as topping on dishes. They are healthy for your heart and give you plenty of healthy calories with just one tablespoon.
  • Exercise for weight gain – You need to exercise for healthy weight gain. This would ensure that you gain muscles and not fats. It is also needed to improve your appetite. Avoid aerobic exercise and instead opt for resistance workouts and muscle-training. Pushups, dumb bells and other hand weights, pull ups, stomach crunches and Pilates tone your muscles.
