Health Care Issues with Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious health risk not solely because of its symptoms but also the various complications it can lead to. It requires strict adherence to recommended lifestyle changes for preventing the onset of these complications. The health care issues with diabetes are so serious that patients do not mind sticking to the various restrictions imposed by their diabetic diet and on other activities.


Some health care issues caused by diabetes include:

  • Bladder control problems in women – Diabetes can cause bladder problems such as urinary incontinence in women. They need to maintain bladder diary, learn about the medicines for bladder control, and practice pelvic exercises to keep these complications under control.
  • Heart disease and stroke – Diabetics have twice the risk of having a stroke or heart disease. Moreover, they are also likely to develop the condition earlier than non-diabetics. For controlling or preventing the development of heart disease or stroke, diabetics need to make certain dietary and other lifestyle changes.
  • Nerve damage – Diabetic nephropathy, or nerve damage due to diabetes is particularly dangerous as it may not show any symptoms in some patients. The symptoms in others include numbness, tingling or pain in hands and legs. The patients should do their best to stop the symptoms from getting exacerbated to the point of becoming unbearable. If that is already the case, oral medications are given for pain relief.
  • Eye problems – The damage to nerves due to diabetes can occur in the eyes too. Lens, vitreous, retina and optic nerve of the eyes. Diabetics need to understand their eye damage by identifying certain symptoms such as blurry vision, spots before eyes, darkening, and trouble in viewing with eyes’ corners. Keeping blood glucose and blood pressure as close to normal as possible helps to prevent these complications.
  • Kidney disease – The diabetics whose kidney gets damaged need to undergo dialysis or get a healthy kidney transplanted from a donor. The kidney damage due to diabetes is a problem that occurs long after the patient has lived with the disease. A usual course for the development of the disease is 15 to 20 years. Managing blood glucose, having foods with moderate protein content, and blood pressure medications.
  • Erectile dysfunction – The vascular problems caused by diabetes can lead to erectile dysfunction, i.e. impotence in plain language. The treatment for this condition includes oral medications, vacuum devices, injected medications, surgery including surgical implant and psychotherapy.

 

The abovementioned diabetes health issues are some most important ones. Other complications caused by diabetes include erectile dysfunction, sexual and urologic problems, stomach nerve damage and hypoglycaemia. Each of these conditions can be prevented by following specific diabetic care recommendations which involve lifestyle changes.
