Skin Health: Follow These Yoga Practices To Combat Ageing

Our skin frequently reflects our inner health. Skin problems can be exacerbated by stress, bad food, and a sedentary lifestyle. By fostering relaxation, boosting circulation, and lowering stress, incorporating yoga into your daily practise can do wonders for your skin.

Pranayama Or Breathing Exercises

“Pranayama, or yoga breathing exercises, are a fantastic way to improve oxygen flow in your body and reduce stress. Deep, controlled breathing techniques like Anulom Vilom and Kapalbhati help remove toxins from your body and promote better blood circulation, which can lead to healthier skin,” said Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar.

By reducing stress through regular pranayama, you can minimise the risk of stress-related skin issues like acne and psoriasis.

Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation

“The Sun Salutation is a sequence of twelve yoga poses performed in a fluid motion. It not only offers a full-body workout but also enhances blood circulation, which nourishes your skin cells. The postures involved in Surya Namaskar also help in detoxifying your body by promoting sweat, which can be beneficial for those with clogged pores,” Dr Chaudhary suggested.

Regular practice of Sun Salutations can give your skin a natural, healthy glow.

Twisting Poses

“Twisting yoga poses like Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Lord of the Fishes Pose) and Bharadvajasana (Bharadvaja's Twist) aid in digestion and detoxification. Proper digestion is essential for skin health, as it helps your body absorb vital nutrients and eliminate waste efficiently,” sated Dr Chaudjhary.

By incorporating twisting poses into your routine, you can support your digestive system, which, in turn, contributes to clearer, brighter skin.

Sirsasana

Inversion poses, such as (Headstand) and Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall Pose), promote blood circulation to the face and head.

“These poses can rejuvenate your skin by increasing the supply of oxygen and nutrients to your facial skin cells. Improved blood flow also helps remove waste and toxins, leaving your skin looking fresh and revitalised,” Dr Chaudhary explained.

Shavasana

Stress is a significant factor in many skin conditions, including acne and premature ageing. Shavasana and Yoga Nidra are deeply relaxing practices that help reduce stress and anxiety. When you're less stressed, your body produces fewer stress hormones like cortisol, which can negatively affect your skin. Regularly practising these relaxation techniques can lead to a more youthful and radiant complexion.

Additional Tips for Healthy Skin

In addition to these yoga practices, here are some extra tips to support better skin health:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and supple.
  • Eat a Balanced Diet: Consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and antioxidants to nourish your skin from within.
  • Cleanse and Moisturise: Follow a proper skincare routine to cleanse, moisturise, and protect your skin.
  • Sun Protection: Use sunscreen to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.
  • Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get enough restorative sleep, as it's crucial for skin repair and regeneration.

Including these yoga practices in your daily routine, coupled with a healthy lifestyle, can dramatically enhance the health and appearance of your skin. Yoga not only improves physical fitness but also general well-being, including skin health and brightness. So, grab your yoga mat and set out on a road to a healthier, more attractive you, both inside and out.
