Alcohol in any amount is not good for health but it has been found to cause more severe on women’s health than men. Alcohol consumption in women has been linked to an increased risk of liver and heart diseases, and even infertility.
According to senior hepatologist in Fortis Hospital, Monika Jain, female physiology is not as well built to drain out toxins. Compared to male, the female body becomes more toxic in lesser time and with lesser amount of alcohol. This is because the female body does not process alcohol as quickly as a man’s body, which causes more alcohol in blood.
This contention of Jain is backed by a publication from the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). They have stated that women heavy drinkers are more prone to liver, heart and brain damage than their male counterparts. Some of the problems specific to women caused by alcohol are infertility, menstrual problems, early menopause, and if adolescent girls drink a lot, it can lead to complications in puberty, their overall growth including that of bones.
In case of pregnant women, the adverse health effect of alcohol worsens manifold. Apart from them, the unborn is at risk of serious complications including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Alcohol contains a substance called teratogen which is very harmful for the foetus. It can lead to problems such as FAD (Foetal Alcohol Disorder).
The important point to note for every woman who drinks is that even a small amount of alcohol can lead to problems such as FAD, according to Shivani Gour, gynecologist and director of Isis hospital. FAD can cause health complications for the child’s growth such as delayed physical growth and mental retardation.
The ill-effects of alcohol on women are not only physical. Women who are drunk are more prone to be violent, and are two times more likely than men to die from accidents, diseases and suicide induced by alcohol.
