Why You Shouldn’t Use Scented Menstrual Products

Many women have limited or no access to menstrual products, relying on reusable cloth pads, which can increase their risk of infections. On the other hand, some women not only have access to basic menstrual products like sanitary pads, tampons, and menstrual cups but also opt for scented varieties. While that surely is a luxury, we consulted an expert to explore whether scented menstrual products are truly necessary and if they are safe to use.

Scented Menstrual Products: Are They Effective In Odour Control?

The idea behind scented menstrual pads and tampons is to eliminate the odour that comes with menstruation.

However, according to Dr Dipali Patel, Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, while such menstrual products can help cover up the smell of menstruation, they don't get rid of the stench.

She goes on to mention that managing menstrual odour does not necessarily require scented menstrual products but can be achieved with good cleanliness.

It is important to understand that the vagina is self-cleaning and does not require any additional products to make it clean. In fact, frequent use of scented products can upset the pH balance of the vagina, which can lead to infection.

Are Scented Products Safe To Use?

According to Dr Patel, during menstruation, the vaginal area is particularly sensitive, which is why some women can experience irritation or allergic responses with scented pads and tampons.

She says, "Fragrances contain compounds that might upset the pH equilibrium in the body, causing pain or diseases.”

A 2023 study published in the Frontiers of Reproductive Health found that scented menstrual products may contain ingredients that can cause cancer, endocrine disruption, and other health issues. These include discomfort, allergic reactions, and even infections such as bacterial vaginosis when used for an extended period of time, says Dr Patel, who was not a part of the study.

The general health of the vagina can be impacted by fragrance compounds' disruption of the vaginal flora, she adds.

How Do They Compare In Terms Of Effectiveness And Comfort?

Both scented and unscented pads are equally effective at absorbing menstrual flow, says Dr Patel. However, unscented products don't include any potentially irritating components and are believed to be safer and more comfortable. It is particularly beneficial for sensitive-skinned ladies, such as those with eczema.

Reusable menstruation cups, which are devoid of chemicals and scents, are suggested substitutes for perfumed organic cotton pads and tampons, the doctor adds.

Why Menstrual Health Education Is Important

Menstrual health education is essential for promoting gender equality and empowering women to make informed decisions about their future. It provides the knowledge needed to develop proper hygiene habits, increasing confidence in managing periods and reducing the risk of infections like urinary and reproductive tract infections.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), many women and young girls worldwide still lack access to menstrual products, facilities, and privacy, and therefore, this underscores the urgent need to prioritise menstrual health education.
