Who does not love going to bed after an exhausting day? It is relieving and relaxing and provides you with the energy needed for the next day. But what if you wake up with a body ache instead? It can be unpleasant and cause you discomfort. Have you ever wondered about the cause of your muscles' pain or stiffness even after getting a good night's sleep? It can be caused due to various reasons such as your sleeping position, mattress, sleep disorders, strenuous exercises, etc. It may give rise to various physical and mental health trauma if the cause is an underlying disease.

Causes Of Body Ache After You Wake Up

Sleeping Position

Sleeping position is one of the most common reasons for body aches when you wake up. It is advisable to avoid sleeping on your stomach, as it can cause back and neck pain. People with obstructive sleep apnoea or breathing problems are usually advised to sleep on their side.

A poor-quality mattress can result in developing body aches after waking up. Pressure points are produced as you sink into the stiffer support core of a faulty mattress, which causes discomfort. A poor-quality mattress is sagging, has poor support, and is a buildup of dust and allergens. A good quality mattress will provide full support to your body and will make you feel comfortable.

Another reason for waking up with muscle pain is your weight. Being overweight can increase the pressure on your back and neck, which results in pain. It can also contribute to breathing problems, which can affect the quality of your sleep. You should maintain a healthy diet or consult a doctor if you have complications.

Sleep Breathing Disorders

You can have body aches when you wake up if you suffer from sleep breathing disorders. This happens because your body is unable to receive a sufficient amount of oxygen which is necessary to repair your body when you are asleep. This eventually leads to body and muscle pain when you wake up after sleeping. Some signs of sleep breathing disorders are as follows:

  • You may snore, choke, or gasp when you are asleep
  • You may feel sleepy during the daytime
  • You may have a headache in the morning, which may persist for long hours
  • Your mouth can feel dry when you wake up
  • You may have difficulty concentrating and are easily frustrated or irritated
  • Apart from these common causes, there can be an underlying disease which causes your body to ache when you wake up. Some of them are as follows:
  • Stress or anxiety disorders
  • Viral infections
  • Anaemia
  • Pneumonia
  • Lack of vitamin D in the body
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Arthritis

Tips To Prevent Body Ache When You Wake Up

  • You should prefer a good quality mattress and pillows that can support your body.
  • Avoid sleeping on your stomach or in any other posture that strains your neck.
  • You can take a warm shower to relax your muscles and relieve the pain.
  • You should exercise and stretch your body to remove muscle stiffness.
