What are the Symptoms of Chikungunya?
Chinkungunya symptoms include fever, nausea, vomittig, headache and pain in back. Its symptoms resembels a lot with that of dengue fever.
The symptoms of chikungunya fever are similar to dengue fever; hence many cases are often misdiagnosed. Symptoms of the disease usually start 3 – 7 days after an infected bite (but can occur for 2 – 12 days). Many infections remain “silent” (or without symptoms) but the incidence of infection without symptom is not exactly known. Read to know the symptoms of chikungunya fever:
- Fever. Sudden in onset and can be as high as 1040F.
- Severe headache.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Pain in the Lower Back.
- Joint Pain. The pain can be severe and persistent. Joint pain is the main and the most significant symptom of chikungunya fever. Some cases with incapacitating joint pain or arthritis persistent for weeks or months have been reported. The area around the joints is painful to touch and may or may not be swollen. Patients with dengue fever do not usually have such prolonged joint pain and fatigue.
- Rashes can occur sometimes but a haemorrhagic rash is rare.
- Redness in eye and difficulty in looking at light.
The fever usually lasts for two days and then defers but symptoms such as joint pain, intense headache, insomnia and an extreme degree of prostration, can persist for about 5 to 7 days. In some cases the joint pain can last for weeks to years beyond the acute stage. Death due to chikungunya infections occurs rarely.
