There are two most popular diets- keto and paleo which are on the rage these days. You would find a lot of people following these diets either for weight management or for a healthier lifestyle. One of the common things in between them is that both are low-carb diets but there are many other differences. How are keto diet and paleo diet different from each other? One common factor between these two diets is that they rule out carbohydrates from the plate. While the distinguishing factor is that while keto diet focuses on high-fat diet, paleo diet is all about consuming more protein than carbs. Both have their own set of health benefits but there are certain risks too. While keto diet is highly popular, it is not a pleasurable experience for those who have tried it. Paleo diet is quite accommodating though.
The keto diet
Keto diet is all over the web as a lot of celebrities follow this diet and the public is following their idols’ footsteps. First and foremost, let us warn you that it is as difficult to follow as easy it sounds. You are required to cut down on the carbs and focus on fat. Your diet should have 70% of fat, 25% of protein and 5% or less carbs. The aim of this is to push the body into ‘ketosis’ state where it starts to burn fat for fuel in the absence of carbs. Thus, all the fat is utilized as fuel and you get a lean and toned body.
Here is a list of foods that are allowed in a keto diet:
- Nuts and seeds
- Healthy fats like butter, clarified butter(ghee), olive oil
- Green leafy vegetables
The paleo diet
If you compare paleo diet with keto diet, this is literally a piece of cake. It allows you to have a wide range of food items including many fruits and vegetables that are a strict no-no in keto diet. Paleo diet is a liberal diet with no percentage restrictions. Instead, this diet focuses more on food groups rather than foods. There are certain food groups like meat, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables that you can eat and food groups like dairy, whole and refined grains, processed foods to avoid. In layman language, this diet is based on the ancient caveman diet. Anything that is naturally available without harvesting is allowed.
