What Is the Best Age to Become Parents?

When to start a family is a deeply personal decision that depends on your physical health, emotional preparedness, financial stability and career goals. Here's a look at the pros and cons of becoming parents at different stages of life, as per Dr Rohan Krishnakumar, Consultant - Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan:

Prior to Age 20

Having children during teenage years is often discouraged because of financial challenges and lack of emotional maturity, although it is biologically ideal due to peak fertility. However, teenagers who become mothers may not even have viable career opportunities or support systems. Nonetheless, teenage mothers usually face fewer hazards such as high blood pressure and gestational diabetes when they are younger.

Ages 20-24

In the early twenties, women still have about a twenty-five per cent opportunity to get pregnant per month. This period has a biological advantage associated with it and generally fewer health problems related to pregnancy. However, persons who are still going through higher education or just entered the labour market for the first time may experience serious instability in terms of their finances. In addition, readiness mentally and emotionally towards being parents varies widely among different individuals belonging to this age category.

Ages 25-29

This is sometimes seen as a perfect period in life for starting a family. Fertility rates remain relatively high while people at this age may have more life experiences and probably some level of financial independence as well as emotional maturity than they did in their early twenties. Many others in their middle twenties already have established careers that can provide better conditions for nurturing children.

Ages 30-34

The 30s comprise a period in life when fertility rates are still very good, albeit with a slight decrease. Most people at the beginning of their thirties have had some time to develop their careers, find the right partner and achieve a reasonable level of financial stability. This is the age bracket that allows one to be young enough to enjoy being an adult while at the same time mature enough to be responsible for raising children. For many women, especially those in their late thirties or early forties who have no fertility concerns; they can go ahead and get pregnant naturally.

Ages 35-39

As the age advances past thirty-five years old, chances of getting pregnant diminish significantly and this goes along with increased complications during pregnancy such as high blood pressure and gestational diabetes. Also with these treatments increasing age can lead to reduced success rates in treatment for infertility such as IVF. However, most people who are approaching forty already have well-established professions and strong support networks which can give them a firm basis for starting families. If any person within this age group has plans of having a child they need to know what risks are associated with it by talking with doctors

Bottomline

The point is that there is no one particular “perfect” age when it comes to becoming a parent, the decision depends on different individual situations. Biological factors, personal preparedness, financial stability and career objectives are all very important when making such a decision. Montana Jordan chose to be a father at 21 but others may think otherwise. What is most important in this case is whether the would-be parents feel confident enough and can afford to create a loving atmosphere for their children despite their age.
