The winter seems to be fading away as the warmth of the sun beckons us outdoors. However, this much-needed respite from the cold weather does make it easy to underestimate the importance of sunscreen. But failing to apply sunscreen can have significant consequences for our skin health.

Talking to the team of OnlyMyHealth, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor Of Ayurvedic Medicine And Surgery, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar shared the pitfalls of not using sunscreen and why it's essential to incorporate this simple step into your daily routine.

Skin Cancer

This is a well-known danger. "Perhaps the most significant danger of forgoing sunscreen is the heightened risk of skin cancer," said Dr Chaudhary. Cancer Research UK corroborated that prolonged exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays without protection can damage the DNA in our skin cells, leading to mutations that can ultimately result in skin cancer, including melanoma, the most deadly form of the disease. "Regular use of sunscreen helps to mitigate this risk by blocking UV radiation and preventing skin damage," Dr Chaudhary added.

Premature Ageing

Sun exposure is a leading cause of premature ageing. "UV radiation penetrates the skin, breaking down collagen and elastin fibres that give skin its firmness and elasticity," said Dr Chaudhary.

According to researchers from the University of Michigan Medical School, if you don't use sunscreen, over time this can lead to the development of wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and sagging skin. By applying sunscreen daily, you can help preserve your skin's youthful appearance and prevent premature ageing, recommended Dr Chaudhary.

Sunburn

Sunburn is not only painful and uncomfortable but also a clear sign of skin damage said Dr Chaudhary. "Prolonged exposure to the sun without protection can cause the skin to become red, inflamed, and blistered, leading to peeling and increased risk of infection," he said. Sunscreen acts as a barrier, reducing the amount of UV radiation that reaches the skin and preventing sunburn.

Hyperpigmentation

Have you noticed those discoloured or dark spots on your grandparents or parents? Those are the signs of hyperpigmentation due to years of exposure to the sun.

Exposure to UV radiation can trigger an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for giving skin its colour, according to the National Cancer Institute. This can lead to the development of dark patches and uneven skin tone, a condition known as hyperpigmentation.

"By wearing sunscreen regularly, you can help prevent the formation of dark spots and maintain a more uniform complexion," said Dr Chaudhary.

Eye Damage

Dr Chaudhary said, "The delicate skin around the eyes is particularly susceptible to sun damage." Dr Chaudhary shared that prolonged exposure to UV radiation without protection can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye conditions. This information is also corroborated by numerous studies including one published in the Transactions of the American Opthalmological Society

"Look for sunscreen specifically formulated for the face and apply it generously around the eyes to shield this sensitive area from the sun's harmful rays," said Dr Chaudhary. You can also wear UV protection sunglasses when out in the sun.

Dr Chaudhary concluded that including sunscreen in your daily skincare routine is a simple yet effective way to protect your skin and safeguard your overall well-being. So, before you step out into the sun, remember to apply sunscreen generously and make sun protection a priority. Your skin will thank you for it in the years to come.
