Regardless of the weather, a broad-spectrum sunscreen (protecting against UVA and UVB rays) with a high SPF is a must-have. Apply it generously onto exposed areas, including the face, neck, ears, and hands, at least 1 hour before stepping outside.
2. Seek Shade
While many enjoy basking in the sunshine, it's important to seek shade, especially during peak UV Index hours, typically between 10 AM to 4 PM. Umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats, and protective clothing offer additional protection from harmful UV rays.

3. Stay Hydrated
Moisturised skin is better able to resist harm from UV light. It's essential to stay hydrated throughout the day, but even more so when spending long periods outside.

"One of the most effective ways to protect your skin is by using sunscreen. Make sure to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin, including your face, neck, ears, and hands. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapply it every two hours, or more frequently if you're sweating or swimming," said Dr Jayaprakash.
"In addition to using sunscreen, seeking shade is another important sun safety tip. Try to avoid spending extended periods in direct sunlight, especially during the peak hours of 10 AM to 4 PM when the sun's rays are the strongest. If you're outdoors, use umbrellas, wear wide-brimmed hats, and cover up with lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin from sun damage."
"Staying hydrated is also crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin moisturised and better able to resist damage from UV light. Remember to moisturise your skin regularly, especially after spending time outdoors," said Dr Jayaprakash.
"Regular self-examinations of your skin can help detect any changes early on. Keep an eye out for new moles, sores that don't heal, or changes in the size, shape, or colour of existing moles. If you notice anything unusual, consult a dermatologist as soon as possible."
"For individuals with a family history of skin cancer or other risk factors, regular professional skin screenings are recommended. A dermatologist can examine your skin for any signs of skin cancer and provide guidance on how to protect yourself from sun damage," he added.
