If you have a healthy diet, it can minimize the effect of these symptoms. The immense amount of pain which you experience during periods can be avoided if you eat a nutritious diet and avoid the foods which can worsen your condition. So, let’s know what not to eat when on your period.

Foods To Avoid During Periods

The list of foods to avoid on your period begins with caffeine. Caffeine has the ability to constrict your blood vessels and soak all the water from your body, leading to dehydration. Having a cup of coffee can worsen your menstrual discomfort as the dehydration and blood vessel constriction can cause headaches and uneasiness. Completely avoid coffee, caffeinated drinks, and chocolates with caffeine.

Food with High Sugar Content

The food items high on sugar content are exactly the type of foods to avoid while on your period. You must avoid taking candies, bars, soda, or confectionaries when you are menstruating. Having high sugar content food will make the sugar level in the body rise dramatically and then crash. The crash leaves you irritated and low on energy.

Commercially Baked Goods

When you are thinking of what not to eat when you are on your period, one of the things which should top your list is commercially baked goods. These foods have trans-fat or fatty acids which will make the estrogen level shoot up causing a pain in the uterus leading to menstrual cramps.

Foods To Avoid During Periods

Processed Food

While you are menstruating you should refrain yourself completely from having processed food. Canned or processed foods always contain sodium which can cause water retention and bloats the body. Processed meat, cheese, or soy sauce must be avoided and you should check the diet chart of all canned foods. Foods which contain over 200mg of sodium should be avoided completely.

Refined Grains

When the natural grain is processed, it loses all its nutrients and becomes refined grain. This makes them tamper with the blood sugar levels in the body. These factors can worsen the situation during periods.  Therefore, avoid eating foods like pasta, white bread, and white rice when you are on your periods.

These foods can save you from menstrual trouble to a very large extent. However, when you feel tremendous pain, seeking a medical advice is always recommendable.
