What is Burning Mouth Syndrome?

A condition in which a burning sensation occurs in the mouth without any obvious cause is known as burning mouth syndrome. The sensation has an effect on the tongue, gums, lips, inside the cheeks, roof of the mouth, or in any area of the whole mouth.

The syndrome and can begin anytime and can be severe.

The cause of burning mouth syndrome cannot often be determined which makes the treatment even more difficult.

The signs and symptoms of burning mouth syndrome include:

  • Burning sensation mainly affecting the tongue but, may also spread to lips, gums, palate, throat, or the entire mouth.
  • Dry mouth with an increased thirst
  • Changes in taste
  • Loss of taste

The burning mouth syndrome develops in certain patterns. It may occur every morning when you wake up and may increase as the day progresses. Irrespective of the pattern, the discomfort in the mouth may last for months to years. In very rare cases, the symptoms of the syndrome may vanish suddenly or become less frequent.
