Dizziness is a common medical complaint that can range from a feeling of lightheadedness to a more intense sensation of spinning or loss of balance. It is often accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, blurred vision, and a rapid or irregular heartbeat.

Depending on the underlying cause, dizziness can arise from a problem in the inner ear, the brain, or another part of the body. Common causes of dizziness include the following: 

Inner Ear Disorders

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is an inner ear disorder that can cause brief episodes of dizziness. It is caused by a disruption in the inner ear balance system. Other inner ear disorders, such as Meniere's disease, can also cause dizziness. 

Medications

According to research, anticonvulsants, anaesthetics, anti-depressants, analgesics, anti-diabetics, contraceptives, anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals, cardiovascular drugs, sedatives, tranquilisers, cytotoxic agents, and anti-hypertensive drugs can cause dizziness.

Low Blood Pressure

Low blood pressure (hypotension) can cause dizziness, especially when standing up for a prolonged period of time. According to Harvard Health, it affects roughly 20% of those over the age of 65. 

Heart Conditions

Dizziness is characterised as the sensation that the room is spinning or that you are about to pass out. This can be caused by a slow or fast heart beat and can suggest that your heart's electrical system is malfunctioning. This could indicate an arrhythmia or a heart valve problem.

Food To Add  For Dizziness

Bananas

Bananas are rich in potassium, an electrolyte that helps regulate blood pressure and prevent dizziness. 

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a complex carbohydrate that provides your body with sustained energy, which can help to reduce dizziness.

Spinach

Spinach is a vegetarian source of iron, a mineral required by red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body. Iron deficiency anaemia occurs when there is insufficient iron in the body. This ailment may cause you to feel weak and dizzy.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt is a probiotic food that helps to restore the balance of good bacteria in your gut and improve digestion, which can help to reduce dizziness. 

Salmon

Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation, which in turn can reduce dizziness. 

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits are a great source of vitamin C, which can help improve your circulation and reduce dizziness.

Occasional dizziness is nothing to be concerned about. But, if you have repeated episodes of dizziness for no apparent reason or for an extended period of time, you should see a doctor right away.

It also becomes important to see a doctor if you experience dizziness that is severe, prolonged, or accompanied by other symptoms. Depending on the cause, dizziness can be managed with medications, lifestyle changes, or other treatments.
