Head lice are small insects which reside in human hair and thrive on human blood. They cause head rash, scalp problems and itching and that is when most people notice it. There are a number of ways to get rid of head lice. They are:
- Medicated lice shampoos: These medicated shampoos contain insecticides that kill the lice and stop the nits (lice eggs) from hatching.
- Using an anti-lice comb: Rinse your hair with vinegar and water. Water slows down the lice and vinegar loosens the nits. Detangle your hair using a wide-toothed comb. Then using an anti-lice comb, comb out the hair and pull every louse and nit you find and dump them on a paper towel. Burn the paper towel or flush it. With patience and persistence, you will eventually remove all lice and nits.
- Continue using the anti-lice comb: Check every day until you find none for almost a week.
Head lice spread through close contact. So, it is important not to share brushes, combs, beds and clothes with the infected person. Vacuum your furniture and wash all hair accessories such as pins, clips and hair bands and clothes, bedspreads of the infected person in hot water.
