Chaitra Navratri 2024: Tips To Avoid Acidity While Fasting

Chaitra Navratri is a nine-day-long festival during which devotees from all over India and around the world worship Goddess Durga and her nine divine forms. This year, it started on April 9, 2024, and will end on Ram Navmi, which is on April 17.

While there are many ways people celebrate the auspicious festival, fasting is one of the most common rituals followed during these nine days.

In general, fasting means abstaining from foods and drinks. This could be for your health or for religious or ethical purposes. But regardless of what the reason for your fasting is, a common problem reported by people who observe a fast is acidity. We asked an expert whether the two are linked and what can be done to reduce the symptoms.

Can Fasting Cause Acidity In Some People?

In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Edwina Raj, Head of Services - Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, says, "It's a common observation that fasting may cause episodes of acid reflux."

This can be attributed to the continued production of gastric acid in the absence of food, she explains, adding that gastric acid can directly irritate the esophageal mucosa, resulting in heartburn or a retrosternal burning sensation.

However, some research suggests that fasting, particularly intermittent fasting, can improve acidity and heartburn.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology explored if a time-restricted eating plan (16 hours of fasting and 8 hours of eating) could improve symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Researchers monitored acid levels and reflux in 25 patients with suspected GERD. While not everyone fully followed the plan, interestingly, those who did showed a slight decrease in acid exposure and reported feeling less heartburn and regurgitation during fasting periods.

However, more research is needed to understand the link between fasting and acidity.

Tips To Avoid Acidity While Fasting

Sharing a few tips to avoid acidity while fasting, Raj lists:

  • Consuming plenty of fluids throughout the fasting period is crucial.
  • Choose water-rich fruits like watermelon for hydration and some natural sugars.
  • Buttermilk and cold milk can provide a natural source of electrolytes and a soothing effect on the digestive tract.
  • Lukewarm water is a simple and effective way to stay hydrated and support digestion.
  • Consider incorporating peppermint or chamomile teas into your post-fast routine, as herbal infusions possess calming properties that can ease discomfort and promote gut health.
  • When breaking your fast, focus on easily digestible, fibre-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.
  • Almonds and other complex carbohydrates provide sustained energy and support healthy digestion.
  • Including a teaspoon of fennel seeds, black cumin seeds, or cloves in warm water can be a natural approach to managing bloating, indigestion, nausea, and constipation.

Who Should Avoid Fasting?

Fasting has been linked to a variety of potential health benefits. Studies have suggested that it can aid in weight loss by reducing overall calorie intake and may also improve blood sugar control, potentially benefiting those with type 2 diabetes, while also enhancing heart health by lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels. However, it may not be for everyone.

“Diabetics, pregnant women, and people with preexisting medical conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, digestive issues, or any other medical conditions should consult a physician before starting a fast,” Raj recommends.

Conclusion

If you’re someone who is observing fast during the nine-day festival of Chaitra Navratri, pay attention to any gastrointestinal distress. Address your symptoms and consult a doctor if the problems are persistent. Eat healthy, fibre-rich, and hydrating foods and fruits while limiting your intake of fatty, fried, processed, and sugary foods.
