Text Neck Syndrome: The Modern Era Pain Caused By Poor Body Posture

In today's technology-driven world, it's no surprise that many of us spend long hours glued to our handheld devices, such as mobile phones and tablets. However, this excessive use of technology comes at a cost – the rise of a new condition known as text neck syndrome. This stress injury has become increasingly common, causing pain in the neck, shoulder, and upper back due to poor body posture. To know more about this condition, we spoke to Dr Sunil Dachepalli, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic, Robotic Joint Replacement and Arthroscopic Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

"The strain placed on the neck while texting or watching on handheld devices for extended periods is equivalent to carrying an 8-year-old child on your shoulders for 2-4 hours," said Dr Dachepalli.

According to the International Journal of Health Sciences and Research text neck syndrome, also known as 'Modern Era Pain,' is a repetitive stress injury caused by prolonged neck flexion at various angles. Its name stems from the direct correlation between this syndrome and the prevalent use of modern gadgets in our era.

Signs and Symptoms of Text Neck Syndrome

Text-Neck-Syndrome

The signs and symptoms of text neck syndrome are varied but unmistakable. "Individuals suffering from this condition often experience sharp and dull aching pain in the neck and shoulders," said Dr Dachepalli.

He added that the tightness and stiffness associated with this syndrome can lead to reduced movement in the affected areas. "Additionally, headaches, decreased sensation or pins and needles feeling in the upper limbs, and even eye pain are common complaints," he mentioned.

Complications Related to Text Neck Syndrome

Complications related to text neck syndrome should not be overlooked. According to Dr Dachepalli, there is a significant association between this condition and various health issues, such as headaches, neurological problems, depression, and heart diseases. "While the symptoms may start subtly, the negative impact on overall health increases each time one hunchs over to use their phone," he added.

Preventing Text Neck Syndrome

Preventing text neck syndrome is crucial for maintaining good posture and overall well-being. Simple adjustments in our habits can make a significant difference.

"Holding mobile devices or tablets at eye level, sitting upright with the chin tucked and shoulder blades rolled backwards, and taking regular breaks every 15 minutes are effective strategies," suggested Dr Dachepalli.

"Reminders can be set to change positions and reduce the strain on the neck and shoulders. For children, it is advisable to place the device on a table rather than holding it in their hands or placing it on the floor," he added.

Treatment of Text Neck Syndrome

"If text neck syndrome does occur, a comprehensive treatment plan is essential. This typically involves a combination of manual therapy, corrective exercises, and medication," said Dr Dachepalli.

He added that physical therapy treatments, such as contrast baths, gentle massages, and the use of soft collars can be beneficial. "In severe cases where complications, such as prolapsed discs, extra bone growth, or compressed nerves arise, injections, or surgery may be required," he suggested.

He added that the recovery time can vary but typically takes around 4-8 weeks, depending on the patient's compliance with the treatment plan.

When to See a Doctor?

It is important to recognise when to seek medical attention for text neck syndrome. "Increased pain, tingling and numbness in the hands, weakness in the upper limbs, disturbed sleeping patterns, and pain that worsens after exercises are all indicators that medical consultation is necessary," said the doctor.

Conclusion

Text neck syndrome is a prevalent issue in our technology-dominated society. However, with proper posture, education, awareness, and physical therapy, the development of this condition can be reduced. By taking proactive steps to maintain good posture and seeking appropriate treatment when needed, individuals can alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with text neck syndrome, improving their overall quality of life.
