Cases of childhood obesity are on the rise and it is an alarming concern which requires imminent attention. Obesity amongst growing children in India is rising and the major factor to blame here is increasing intake of junk food. Junk foods are made up of unhealthy fats and are highly processed. They are high in calories and they lack minerals and vitamins proving to be non nutritional for kids.
In recent years, India has witnessed a significant rise in the consumption of junk food among children. The easy availability and affordability of these sugary and highly processed junk foods with attractive packaging and addictive taste have made them a popular choice among children these days.
Consumption of junk food can lead to enormous health problems in the long run, major being obesity which leads to more underlying conditions like diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even heart attack and strokes.
As per Unicef’s World Obesity Atlas for 2022, India is predicted to have more than 27 million obese children representing one in 10 children globally, by 2030. India ranks 99th on the list of 183 countries in terms of preparedness to deal with obesity and economic impact of obesity.
