overactive thyroid signsProduction of too much thyroid hormone can bring a lot of physical and emotional changes. Men with overactive thyroid might notice several symptoms such as an irregular heartbeat, intolerance to heat, fatigue, and sleeping difficulties. Some may experience weight loss or weight gain owing to disturbed metabolism.

Weight Changes

Hyperthyroidism in men can make them lose weight as their metabolism works more quickly. Some men lose weight despite an increase in caloric intake. In a few cases, the thyroid condition can cause weight gain.

Behavioural Changes

When the thyroid is overactive, it can make you more irritable and anxious. You may notice yourself experiencing more mood swings than usual and frequent anxiety attacks. Behavioural changes in men can cause sleeping difficulties.

Irregular Heart Rate

The sensation of having a very fast heartbeat is a common symptom of overactive thyroid gland. Men with an overactive thyroid may experience an irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations, in some cases up to more than 100 beats per minute.  Besides irregular heartbeat, breathing becomes laboured and one may feel as if their heart is about to burst out of their chest. In elderly, heart failure is one of the possibilities.

Thyroid Problems

If your thyroid is overactive, you may develop a goitre or thyroid nodules. In some cases, the physical changes may simply look as a swelling at the base of the neck.

Gastrointestinal Issues

Change in your bowel patterns, particularly more bowel movements than normal, is reported by men with overactive thyroid. Some people may also experience diarrhoea.

Skin problems

Hyperthyroidism is also associated with skin conditions such as dry skin, rashes, discoloration, acne and oedema.

Other Symptoms

Among other symptoms of overactive thyroid in men include - increased sweating, increased heat sensitivity, muscle tremors and fatigue. The less common symptoms of hyperthyroidism in men are hair loss, vomiting, puffy or swollen eyes, irritation in the eyes and an overproduction of tears.

The symptoms of hyperthyroidism increase in severity as the condition worsens. The initial signs are subtle and difficult to interpret. It is recommended to keep an eye on your weight, take note of any differences in heart rhythm, check for an enlarged or swollen neck and how often you use the bathroom for bowel movements. Overactive thyroid may profuse and cause unexplained sweating. If you suspect these symptoms, see your doctor immediately.

Hyperthyroidism is a treatable condition. With treatment, a person can lead a healthy life. If the symptoms are ignored or condition is not managed, overactive thyroid can lead to serious complications such as heart, bone, and vision problems. Over time, the condition may cause muscle weakness paired with bone weakness. Osteoporosis, usually caused by low levels of calcium and causing frail bones, is also associated with the thyroid disorder.
