Melatonin is a hormone that the brain produces in response to darkness which helps with the timing of the circadian rhythms and then in turn with sleep and sleeping patterns. Whereas, exposure to light at night can block the melatonin production in the body. Studies have also shown that certain amounts of melatonin were effective in treating migraines even though it’s unclear if that has to do with the melatonin itself or even improved sleep.
Another promising study published in the journal Neurology found that daily 3-mg doses of melatonin helped in reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines. More than three-quarters of the research participants reported experiencing at least 50% fewer migraine attacks.
