According to a new research taking proper night sleep can save you from cancer. The Study was conducted at German Cancer Research Center and it suggested that under certain conditions like stress, chronic blood loss or infection, hematoietic stem cells are driven into a state of rapid cell division to form new blood cells and repair the damaged tissue.
The theory behind this was that state of dormancy protected hematopoietic stem cells from DNA Damage protecting them from premature aging said Dr. Michael Milson, Head of the study.
He also said that they believe that the model perfectly explains the gradual accumulation of DNA damage in stem cells with age and reduced ability of a tissue to maintain and repair when it gets older.
According to prof. Dr. Andreas Trumpp, director of HI-STEM and head of the Division of Stem Cells and Cancer at the DKFZ, the link between physiologic stress, mutations in stem cells and aging is very exciting and by understanding the mechanism via which stem cells age. It allows them to think about the strategies which can help prevent or at least reduce the risk of damaged stem cells caused due to aging and cancer.
