Sensory Seeking: Know It's Signs In A Newborn

The early days of parenthood are filled with observation as you get to know your newborn. While each baby is unique, some infants exhibit characteristics associated with sensory seeking. Knowing  the signs of sensory seeking in a newborn can help parents foster an environment that supports their child's exploration and development.

What is Sensory Seeking?

“Sensory seeking refers to a baby's heightened interest and active engagement with sensory experiences. These experiences include touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell. A sensory-seeking newborn actively seeks out stimuli to satisfy their need for sensory input, which is important for their cognitive and emotional development,” said Dr Sanjay Chaudhary, MBBS, MD, VMMC, New Delhi.

Signs of Sensory Seeking in Newborns

Active movement

Sensory-seeking newborns often display increased motor activity. They may move their arms and legs vigorously, seemingly in an attempt to explore and interact with their surroundings.

Fascination with Lights and Colours

“A newborn with sensory-seeking tendencies may show a heightened interest in bright lights, contrasting colours, or visually stimulating objects. They may fixate on moving or flashing lights with curiosity,” said Dr Chaudhary.

Strong Grasping Reflex

Sensory seekers tend to have a more pronounced grasping reflex. They may tightly grip onto objects, your fingers, or even their own clothing as a way of exploring the tactile sensations around them.

Preference for Tactile Stimulation

Sensory-seeking newborns may seek out tactile experiences. They may enjoy being touched, massaged, or having their skin gently stroked. Some babies might actively explore various textures through their hands or by putting objects in their mouth.

Engagement with Sounds

A newborn with sensory-seeking tendencies may be drawn to certain sounds. They may turn their head towards noises, coo in response to music, or show interest in rattles or other toys that produce sound.

Excessive Mouthing or Chewing

Sensory seekers often find comfort and satisfaction through oral stimulation. They may engage in excessive mouthing or chewing on their hands, fingers, or objects as a way of exploring and understanding their environment.

Seeking Visual Stimulation

Sensory-seeking newborns may demonstrate a fascination with visual stimuli. They may closely examine patterns, moving objects, or visually engaging toys with a keen interest.

Supporting a Sensory-Seeking Newborn

Provide Varied Textures

Offer a variety of textured objects for your newborn to explore through touch. Soft blankets, textured toys, and different fabrics can stimulate their tactile senses.

Engage in Tummy Time

Encourage tummy time to promote motor development. This helps sensory seekers build strength in their neck and upper body, fostering exploration and movement.

Introduce Musical Toys

Incorporate toys that produce music or gentle sounds to engage your baby's auditory senses. Soft lullabies or rhythmic tunes can be soothing and stimulating.

Offer Safe Objects for Mouthing

Provide safe and clean objects for your baby to mouth and explore orally. This can satisfy their need for oral stimulation while ensuring their safety

Create a Visual Environment

Arrange a visually stimulating environment with contrasting colours, mobiles, or visually appealing toys. This can captivate their attention and encourage visual exploration.

Responsive Interaction

Engage with your baby through responsive interactions. Talk to them, make eye contact, and respond to their cues to create a supportive and nurturing environment.

Recognising the signs of sensory seeking in a newborn allows parents to create a supportive and enriching environment for their child's development. Every baby is unique, and while some may exhibit sensory-seeking tendencies, it's essential to celebrate and embrace these characteristics as part of their individual journey toward exploration and discovery. Responsive parenting that caters to a baby's sensory needs helps lay the foundation for a healthy and fulfilling developmental path.
