Spotting Heart Issues: Expert Lists Signs of Heart Problems During Physical Activity

Engaging in regular exercise is important to stay fit and keep your body away from illnesses. However, it's crucial to be attuned to potential signs of heart problems that may manifest during physical activity. These symptoms may manifest as chest pain, dizziness, or nausea, and should not be taken lightly. Recognising these indicators can be a lifesaver, preventing serious complications. We spoke to our expert Dr V Rajasekhar, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology, Certified Proctor For TAVR and Clinical Director, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, who listed symptoms of heart issues during physical activity.

According to Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, regular exercise has a strong correlation with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular mortality.

The American Heart Association and the American College of Sports Medicine, both advise combining aerobic activities, such as jogging, swimming, and biking with resistance training involving moderate weightlifting. When these two types of exercise are combined, they offer the most significant advantages for preventing and managing heart disease.

Symptoms Of Heart Issues During Physical Activity

Chest Pain

One of the most prominent signals is chest pain or discomfort. This sensation may vary, presenting as pressure, squeezing, or fullness. “If you experience any such discomfort, it's essential not to dismiss it as mere fatigue or muscle soreness. Take it seriously and pause your exercise immediately”, highlighted Dr Rajasekhar.

Shortness Of Breath

Shortness of breath, beyond what is considered normal for the intensity of your workout, is another warning sign. If you find yourself struggling to catch your breath or feeling excessively winded, it's time to listen to your body and seek medical advice.

Dizziness

Another symptom during exercise that you should not ignore is dizziness or fainting. Dr Rajasekhar added, “These can be indicative of inadequate blood flow to the brain, potentially stemming from cardiovascular issues. If you experience persistent dizziness, consult with a healthcare professional promptly.”

Fatigue

Unusual fatigue or weakness, especially when accompanied by other symptoms, demands attention. Feeling excessively tired during or after exercise could be a sign that your heart is not functioning optimally. If fatigue is disproportionate to your exertion level, consider it a red flag.

Nausea

Nausea, vomiting, or pain radiating to the arms, neck, jaw, or back are critical signs that warrant immediate medical attention. These symptoms may indicate a heart attack in progress, and timely intervention is essential.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the risk of heart problems related to physical activity depends on your fitness level and the intensity of the activity. Also, find out from your doctor what kind of physical activity is safe for you if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, or any other chronic (ongoing) illness. You can also talk about how to include physical activity in your routine gradually and safely.

Bottomline

Dr Rajasekhar concluded, “To safeguard your heart health, regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are paramount. Communicate openly about your exercise routine, and don't hesitate to seek advice if you notice any of these warning signs. Remember, being proactive about your cardiovascular health is the key to enjoying a long and active life.”
