It is found in high-altitude rocky mountain ranges such as the Himalayas, Altai and Pamir, particularly in countries like India, Nepal, Pakistan, China and Russia. In Ayurveda, Shilajit is considered an essential herb, beneficial for both physical and mental health. According to Ayurvedic doctor Shrey Sharma, “Shilajit is a type of natural resin obtained from the mountains. It is found primarily in the Himalayas, Kashmir, and other hilly areas”. Dr Sharma further explained that there are two main types of Shilajit, “Black Shilajit, which is obtained from the Himalayan range and the white Shilajit, which is found in the hilly regions of South India.”

According to Ayurveda, Shilajit has a number of health benefits regardless of age and gender. It does not only provide energy and strength to the body, but it is also an excellent remedy to deal with mental fatigue. It provides a boost of energy and helps in improving overall stamina. During the discussion, Dr Sharma explains the following benefits of Shilajit:

Increases Immunity

Shilajit intake strengthens the immune system and gives the body the strength to fight disease. According to Dr Sharma, it is capable of boosting immunity to the same extent as other ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha.

Balances Testosterone Level in Men

Shilajit is considered a treasure trover for men’s sexual health. According to experts, it supports the healthy testosterone level and boosts the sperm counts in men. Consuming shilajit in the right dose also improves the sperm quality. It is known to have rejuvenating properties which helps to boost the stamina and overall sex life.

In Ayurveda, Shilajit is also known as a life-prolonging herb as its consumption prevents aging. “It nourishes all the seven metals of the body including zinc, iron, and copper and slows down the aging process,” Dr Sharma mentions.

Increases Body Warmth

Shilajit keeps the body warm, which makes it especially beneficial for the winter season protecting from several seasonal health problems like cough and cold.

However Dr Sharma emphasises that these benefits are effective when consuming genuine Shilajit. “Many products available in the market are fake. Purchase it only from certified and reliable sellers instead of roadside vendors,” he advises.

Right Amount Of Dose

According to the expert, Shilajit should be consumed in moderation. If you are young, you should consume 2 grams of Shilajit daily but children should only be given half a gram. Pregnant women should not consume more than 1 gram of Shilajit unless advised by a doctor.

During the discussion, Dr Sharma mentions that one can consume Shilajit by adding it to milk, tea, or coffee. This helps keep the body warm, especially during winter. Shilajit can be consumed in appropriate amounts during autumn and winter regardless of their age. However during summers one should be cautious about the dose and take advice from the doctor.
