Symptoms and Milestones

“The second trimester, spanning from week 13 to week 28, is often regarded as the most enjoyable phase of pregnancy for many women. During this period, the initial challenges of the first trimester, such as nausea and fatigue, typically subside, allowing expectant mothers to embrace a newfound sense of energy and well-being”, said Dr Chakraborty.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, with the formation of all major organs and systems in the foetus complete, the next six months will primarily focus on growth. During this time, the foetus will experience significant weight gain, multiplying by more than seven times, transitioning into a stage where it can potentially survive outside the uterus as a fully developed baby.

Health Monitoring

One of the hallmark moments of the second trimester is the sensation of foetal movement, commonly referred to as 'quickening', which is usually experienced between weeks 20 and 22. This magical milestone serves as a poignant reminder of the life growing within the womb, fostering a deeper connection between mother and baby.

Dietary Considerations

“Additionally, gastrointestinal discomfort, which may have been prevalent in the first trimester due to hormonal fluctuations, tends to diminish in severity during the second trimester. While some women may still experience occasional bouts of indigestion or heartburn, these symptoms are typically milder and more manageable”, highlighted Dr Chakraborty.

Importance Of A Balanced Diet

A balanced and nutritious diet is paramount during pregnancy, especially as the nutritional needs of both mother and baby evolve with each trimester. In the second trimester, a focus on foods rich in iron, protein, and calcium is particularly important to support the growing demands of the developing foetus.

In addition to focusing on specific nutrients, expectant mothers should strive to maintain a well-rounded diet comprising a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats to ensure optimal nutrition for both themselves and their babies.

Role Of Iron

Iron plays a crucial role in preventing maternal anaemia and supporting the baby's cognitive development, making it essential to add iron-rich foods, such as lean meats, fortified cereals, leafy green vegetables, and legumes into the diet.

Protein is another vital nutrient that aids in foetal growth and development, as well as supporting the mother's increased blood volume and tissue repair. Good sources of protein include poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, tofu, nuts, and seeds.

Role Of Calcium

Calcium is essential for the formation of the baby's bones and teeth, as well as maintaining the mother's bone health. Dairy products, leafy greens, fortified plant-based milk alternatives, and calcium-fortified foods are excellent sources of this essential mineral.

However, expectant mothers need to remain vigilant about their health and well-being throughout the second trimester. Regular prenatal check-ups are essential for monitoring factors, such as weight gain, blood pressure, and urine analysis, which can provide valuable insights into both maternal and foetal health.
