Sciatica is the pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, it runs from the lower back through the thigh. It is the pain caused by the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.

The pain is mainly caused due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, etc. which can cause pain in either both or one leg. It can also cause inflammation, pain and numbness in the affected leg.

Warning Signs of Sciatica

The main symptom of sciatica is pain and discomfort that starts in the back and the lower back and goes to the hips, then to the back of your leg, sometimes into the foot. The pain is usually felt on one of the legs - it is rare that it will happen on both the sides.

The pain can worsen when sitting down and standing, with a sudden movement such as coughing.

Other tips to keep in mind

Avoid heavy lifting - Physical activity is important to stay healthy. However, avoid heavy lifting if you suffer from such a condition as heavy lifting can compress the nerves causing mild to severe pain.

Acupuncture - Take frequent acupuncture sessions from a professional as it can help you a lot with the pain. You can also ask the expert to use moxa and herbal remedies along with acupuncture.

Heating pads - After you get relief from ice packs, use heating pads. The change in temperature promotes circulation and improves the healing process. Ensure that you apply heating pads after you use the ice pack.

Use a back brace - A back brace will support your back and make it easy for you to do some physical activities. Avoid sitting or standing for long without the back brace as it can compress the injured area even more.

Take a lot of rest - An ample amount of rest and sleep is the best way to treat sciatica pain. Do not sit or stand for a long time and sleep for at least 7 hours a day.
