Regenerative Medicine: A Ray Of Hope For Couples With Recurrent Implantation Failure

Recurrent Implantation Failure (RIF) is repeated failure of embryo implantation on the uterus wall following the In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). According to research around 10% couples experience RIF, while undergoing IVF.

“Despite increasing literature on RIF, there is still no widely accepted definition or standard protocol for the diagnosis and treatment of RIF. Progress in predicting and preventing RIF has been hampered by a lack of widely accepted definitions,” a research published by National Institute of Health stated.

But no, here, we do not lose hope here. A lot of couples experience miscarriages after which IVF becomes a hope for them. But when RIF happens, that one hope of becoming parents dies down. Although it is possible to have babies even after that.

The research by NIH states, “Most couples with RIF can become pregnant after clinical intervention. Couples with RIF require psychological support and appropriate clinical intervention.”

To understand how a couple can become pregnant after RIF, OnlyMyHealth team spoke to Dr Pradeep Mahajan, Regenerative Medicine Researcher & Founder of StemRx BioScience Solutions, Navi Mumbai.

Causes Of RIF

Explaining RIF and its causes, Dr Mahajan said, “In this complicated world of assisted reproductive technologies, recurrent implantation failure RIF poses a significant challenge for couples desiring to become parents. Recurrent implantation failure refers to the repeated inability of the embryo to implant successfully in the uterine lining, hampering the hopes of couples undergoing IVF. Factors contributing to recurrent implantation failure are genetic abnormalities, poor embryo quality, developmental issues, endometrial receptivity, uterine abnormalities, and inflammatory conditions.”

According to Dr Mahajan, regenerative medicine can be a boon for couples with RIF, through which they can aspire their dream of parenthood.

Regenerative Medicine

When asked about regenerative medicine, Dr Mahajan said, “It is a field that aims to restore, replace, or regenerate damaged or diseased cells, tissues, or organs to promote healing and improve function. It encompasses various techniques, including stem cell therapy, tissue engineering, gene therapy, and biomaterials. By harnessing the body's innate regenerative capabilities and advanced technologies, regenerative medicine offers promising solutions for treating a wide range of medical conditions, from injuries to chronic diseases.”

How Can Regenerative Medicine Be Put To Use

RIF

Talking further, Dr Mahajan said, couples can still hold a chance of becoming pregnant due to regenerative medicine. Sounds complicated right? Let’s understand from the doctor what it is and how it works.

He said, “Techniques such as stem cell therapy and tissue engineering can enhance the endometrial receptivity, which is crucial for successful embryo implantation. Stem cells derived from various sources, including bone marrow or adipose tissue, can be utilised to repair damaged endometrial tissue and improve its quality and functionality. Additionally, growth factors and biomaterials can be employed to create a supportive environment for embryo implantation. By promoting tissue regeneration and optimising the uterine environment, regenerative medicine holds potential in improving implantation rates and overcoming RIF, offering hope to individuals struggling with infertility.”

According to Dr Mahajan, regenerative medicine can be a boon. He said, “In recent years, regenerative medicine has emerged as a ray of hope in the domain of reproductive health. Stem cell therapy, an important component of regenerative medicine, offers a new approach to address the underlying issues contributing to RIF. Stem cells have the ability to differentiate into various cell types, promoting tissue repair and regeneration.”

Dr Mahajan concluded by saying, “Couples who had previously faced repeated disappointments are now embracing parenthood, thanks to innovative therapies that focus on repairing and rejuvenating the reproductive tissues.”
