Not Cool With The Gym? 4 Reasons Why Swimming Should Be Your Go-To Workout This Summer

3rd Edition of HealthCare Heroes Awards 2023

When it comes to losing weight and getting in shape, the treadmill or weight-training are usually the first things that come to mind. Technically, to lose weight, a person should engage in an activity that raises their heart rate. Both treadmill and weights can help with this. But what if you're afraid of going to the gym and believe that it's only for bodybuilders? No problem, we've got you covered. It's time for you to try swimming.

Why Swimming?

Swimming is not only a fun way to burn calories, but also has benefits that rival even the most intense gym workouts. Here are five reasons why swimming can be your preferred workout.

1) Improves Cardiovascular Health

Any form of physical activity that increases your heart rate is considered cardio, and swimming is great at raising your heart rate. When your heart rate increases, your body begins to sweat and burn calories. Regular swimming can improve your cardiovascular health, which means it is good for your lungs, muscles, bones, and heart. When you weight-train, you mainly focus on the outside beauty: building muscle. Swimming heals your body from the inside. The best thing about swimming is that it helps to relieve joint pain and stiffness, decreasing your chance of getting a sports injury.

2) Fat Loss

Most people rely solely on the treadmill to lose weight. While it is an effective way to burn calories, swimming is superior. This is due to the fact that swimming burns calories while also building muscle tissue, which increases metabolic rate and improves body form. Moreover, swimming works your whole body. When that happens, it takes longer for you to recover, meaning you keep burning calories even at rest.

3) Reduced Injuries

Swimming is a great way to strengthen your core, legs, lower back, and upper body. It can also aid in developing a strong and healthy spine by increasing spinal bone density. This, combined with adequate dietary calcium, may be the best defence against osteoporosis. Swimming can also help with posture correction and developing a strong back and core, which can help prevent lower back pain. As a result, an individual's ability to complete daily tasks at work and home improves.

4) Improve Your Sleep

You spend the day at work and with friends, and when you get home, you are ready for bed but can't fall asleep. This is most likely due to a high cortisol level, which disrupts your sleep. Swimming is among the best activities for reducing cortisol levels and elevating chemicals that aid in sleep. If you don't have time to swim daily, even devoting 30 minutes, three times a week can help. Just make sure to get at least eight hours of sleep every night.
