5 Doctor-Verified Tips For Premature Child Care

Premature babies need a lot of care. They are born prematurely and  their bodies are not developed like babies who have timely deliveries. In most cases, preemies are kept in NICU for weeks or sometimes, months depending upon their health. Their immunity is weak, making them prone to infections, they are highly susceptible to chronic diseases, their digestive system is underdeveloped, and so many other issues that premature babies are at risk of. Thus, they require a lot of critical care and love. After the baby is brought home, parents need to follow certain rules of premature child care to ensure the baby is safe and healthy.

5 Tips To Take Care Of Premature Babies

Onlymyhealth reached out to Dr. Madhuri Prabhu, Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist at Motherhood Hospitals Chennai to know how to provide the right care for premature babies.

Kangaroo care

Kangaroo care is essential for premature babies. They are prone to hypothermia which is a medical condition that makes the body lose heat faster. So, in order to keep them warm, kangaroo care is a must. Mother or father should keep the baby close to their chest to provide body heat. Besides, babies should be kept away from cold environments. Kangaroo care in the initial months is therefore a must for preemies. Parents can also keep them covered in warmers to ensure they don’t get cold.

Schedule feeding

Normally, babies are fed as per their demand. A mother is supposed to feed the baby when he feels hungry but that shouldn’t be done to a premature baby. Since their stomach is not fully developed, they may not be able to digest milk properly. Therefore, scheduled feeding is suggested for premature babies to boost their digestive system. Premature babies sleep more as compared to normal babies. So, it is a must for mothers to feed them every two to three hours to not miss out on nutrition. Lack of feeding puts them at risk of developing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Feed only breastmilk

Premature Child Care tips

There are two types of feeding for newborns, breastmilk feeding and formula milk feeding. Those who are not able to digest breastmilk or deny mother’s milk are given formula milk. However, in the case of preemies, they should only be fed breast milk. It is called liquid gold because it possesses nutrients that strengthen the immune system of the baby and help the body develop.

Also, mother’s milk reduces risk of allergies in infections in babies. So, it is best to breastfeed them.

Give Supplements if required

Since premature babies have less ability to store iron, they are more likely to develop anaemiaanemia. This can be fatal for them. Therefore, doctors advise iron supplements to preemies after two to three 2-3 weeks of birth. They may also be given calcium and vitamin D supplements, if the doctor finds them to be at risk of osteopenia(loss of bone mineral density).

Monitor the child's development

The growth charts of premature babies are different from the growth charts of normal babies. These are called Fenton Growth Charts, the baby should be examined and monitored accordingly.
