Did you know glaucoma can result in irreversible vision loss if not treated on time? This eye condition causes progressive damage to the optic nerve of the eye leading to permanent vision loss and is most often due to an increased eye pressure. Although it primarily affects the eyes, various aspects of overall health contribute to its effects. We spoke to our expert Dr Digvijay Singh; Director, Noble Eye Care, Gurugram, who listed precautions that people with glaucoma should take.
Precautionary Measures For People Diagnosed With Glaucoma
Glaucoma can be prevented from worsening by following a few basic well-being measures and precautions. Dr Singh suggested some of them as follows:
Control hypertension and diabetes
Did you know both high and low blood pressure can lead to worsening of glaucoma? Therefore, you should keep your blood pressure in an optimum range. Diabetics must control their blood sugar levels and limit excessive fluctuations.
Avoid drinking large quantities of water in one go
Dr Singh informed, “Some people have the practice of flushing their systems in the morning by drinking multiple glasses of water at once. This practice can cause eye pressure to rise and worsen glaucoma.” It is not recommended for glaucoma patients to take large volumes of fluids in one go, but preferably divide and take in multiple smaller portions.

Avoid exercises causing increased pressure in the head region
Patients with glaucoma should avoid certain types of exercises that require the head to be below the heart for extended periods or involve a sudden increase in head pressure. This advice applies to weightlifting as well.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends brisk walking and regular exercise at a moderate pace to lower your eye pressure and promote overall health.
Manage chronic cough and constipation
Repeated coughing or straining on the toilet can cause high eye pressure during the process. Such issues can harm the vision of someone with glaucoma. Hence, it's advisable to steer clear of environmental or dietary factors that contribute to these problems.
Control snoring
Snoring and associated sleep apnoea are risk factors for certain forms of glaucoma. “If you are a glaucoma patient with these sleep-related problems, take precautions, such as sleeping in a lateral position and preventing a blocked nose to avoid precipitating these”, added Dr Singh. Also, seek medical help for controlling these sleep diseases.

Do Not Take Any Form Of Steroids
Dr Singh highlighted, “Steroids are a group of chemicals known for elevating eye pressure. Approximately one in ten individuals may experience increased eye pressure when using steroids. It's advisable to avoid these substances and inform your doctor about your glaucoma if they are considering prescribing them.”
Take your medicine as per schedule
You should follow the prescribed glaucoma medication provided by your ophthalmologist. Consistently missing these medications can lead to vision loss and should be avoided at all costs.
