Types of Lip Augmentation Procedures

Lip augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the fullness and shape of the lips. There are several methods available, each with its own benefits and limitations:

Lip Fillers

As per Dr Nivedita Dadu, Skin Specialist, Founder and Chairman, Dadu Medical Centre, lip fillers are one of the most commonly chosen methods for enhancing lip volume. The procedure involves injecting a gel-like substance, often hyaluronic acid, into the lips to add fullness. Before the injections, a topical anaesthetic is applied to numb the area, and ice may be used to further reduce discomfort and swelling. The entire process is relatively quick, taking about 15 to 30 minutes, and patients can typically return to their daily routines immediately. However, the effects of lip fillers are temporary, lasting approximately 6 to 8 months, necessitating follow-up treatments.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting, or autologous lip augmentation, involves using the patient’s own fat to enhance lip volume. Fat is harvested from areas such as the abdomen, purified, and then injected into the lips. This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and takes about 60 to 90 minutes. The results are more long-lasting compared to fillers, often lasting up to 5 years.

Tissue Grafting

Tissue grafting is a technique where a piece of the patient's own skin is used to augment the lips. The skin is typically taken from the lower abdomen or a previous surgical scar. This method is performed under local anaesthesia and generally takes 60 to 90 minutes. It is a more permanent solution, with results lasting at least 5 years.

Lip Implants

For a more permanent solution, lip implants can be used. Implants are inserted into the lips through small incisions made at the corners of the mouth. This procedure, done under local anaesthesia, takes around 30 minutes, and patients can go home the same day. The procedure provides a long-term enhancement but may involve adjustments and maintenance.

Lip Lifts

Lip lifts involve surgical alterations to enhance the appearance of the lips. Various types include:

  • Direct Lip Lift: Removes skin from just above the red part of the lip to increase lip height.
  • Indirect Lip Lift: Similar to the direct lift but hides scars at the base of the nose.
  • Lip Corner Lift: Targets drooping corners by removing small bits of skin to raise the corners of the lips.

These procedures are more invasive and require a few months for full recovery, but they offer a permanent change.
