Ghazal Singer Pankaj Udhas Dies At 72, Sources Indicate Cancer


Veteran Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas has passed away at the age of 72 after suffering a prolonged illness. Nayaab Udhas, the singer’s daughter released a statement confirming the death of ghazal maestro. He died at 11 am on Monday at Breach Candy Hospital, according to reports. 

The statement read, "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February due to a prolonged illness. Udhas family."

Pankaj Udhas’ team said, “Pankaj sir was suffering from a prolonged illness and wasn’t keeping well for the last few days. He died this morning around 11 am at Breach Candy hospital.”

Singer and a close friend of Pankaj Udhas, Anup Jalota revealed that Udhas was suffering through pancreatic cancer. As per a leading news agency, Pankaj Udhas was diagnosed with cancer a few months back. His last rites will be performed on Tuesday, February 27. 

Cancer is becoming prevalent in India because of several factors like unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity and improper schedule. It is a complex disease but it can be prevented if proper lifestyle changes are made.

A study shows that In India, one in nine people are likely to develop cancer in his/her lifetime. Lung and breast cancers were the leading sites of cancer in males and females, respectively. The estimated number of incident cases of cancer in India for the year 2022 was found to be 14,61,427. The study further states, “The incidence of cancer cases is estimated to increase by 12.8 per cent in 2025 as compared to 2020.” 

When OnlyMyHealth team asked about cancer prevalence, Dr Kirti Bushan, Senior Consultant-Surgical Oncology, SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim – A Fortis Associate, said, that genetic and family history contributes to only 10-15% of cancers whereas 85-90% factors are related to diet and lifestyle modifications. 

According to Dr Bushan, lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, avoiding radiation exposure, avoiding alcohol and following a set routine can help preventing cancer.
