New research says that chemical discovered in soaps, hand sanitizers and tubes of toothpaste could be associated with porous bone in females. Chinese scientists used information from US questionnaires to have a deep analysis between bone mass density and chemical triclosan in the body.
What is Triclosan?
Triclosan is just another chemical used in some hand sanitizers, gels, and washes. It is also found in various varieties of toothpaste and mouthwash. (This chemical is anti-bacterial). However, this chemical is supposed to interplay the levels of women's hormones (estrogen), which helps in making bones.
Females and that too postmenopausal females with a bone mass density below a certain level have porous bones. As bones become fragile it makes them more prone to fractures. The scientists have further determined that females with higher levels of triclosan in their urine are more likely to have fragile bones.
This research does not have any evidence, that how this anti-bacterial chemical causes fragile or porous bones. Most likely, there are many factors that are being left behind. Recently in the US, triclosan (anti-bacterial chemical) is officially forbidden by the Food and Drug Administration in various decontaminating goods. However, in the United Kingdom, triclosan is being sold and purchased. Be safe and know about the products you are buying. Check the ingredients table while purchasing antibacterial products.
Where did that study come from?
It was 3 cross-sectional questionnaires in series. It means that it gives a screenshot in time of both anti-bacterial chemical levels in women's urine bone mass quality. This kind of research is good for catching promising dangerous factors.
The scientists discovered that, while comparing the women of low triclosan levels with those with high levels had weaker bones. The result was calculated each and every point including the lower spine to the thigh.
