Debunking Myths About Dental Implants

Dental implants are a good way of fixing lost teeth. They help improve your appearance, speech, eating, and overall oral health. Despite these advantages, many myths and misconceptions about dental implants hold people from choosing them over other dental restorative options. Here are seven myths about dental implants that you need to know.

Dental Implants Are Risky

One of the most common myths about dental implants is that they often fail and are highly risky. However, considering that every person's oral needs are different, taking proper care of your dental implants can make them last a lifetime. In some cases where the implant fails, it can be due to oral infections and bacteria that cause periodontal disease. You can avoid this if you take care of your teeth with proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups.

Dental Implant Treatment Is Painful

The implant insertion technique may cause post-operative pain and discomfort like any oral surgical operation. In case when patients are very anxious and nervous about the surgery, treatments can be administered while the patient is sedated. The replacement teeth are linked to the implants once they are set in place; they do not lie on your gums, preventing surgical site irritation.

Dental Implant Procedure Is Long & Time-Consuming

Another common myth is that the dental implant is a prolonged procedure and takes a lot of time to complete.  Prior to the surgery, all patients undergo an initial evaluation. However, if a treatment plan has been decided upon by the dentist, the procedure itself can be finished in a single day. In cases where extractions are needed, your dental surgeon takes these teeth out before implanting the replacements.

Wearing Dentures Is A Better Alternative

Another myth about dental implants is that they are less effective than dentures. However, you can chew with significantly more force if you have dental implants instead of dentures. In patients wearing dentures as opposed to implants, this force may be as much as 10 times lower.

Dental Implants Do Not Look Natural

Poor aesthetics, another reason why people do not choose dental implants, is another myth about dental implants. Nobody would realise that you had dental implants if they were correctly installed. The artificial tooth is attached to the actual implant, which is hidden behind the gum and should not be seen ideally. Since it is entirely comprised of ceramic material, the false tooth should look exactly like a natural tooth.

Dental Implants Require Special Care

As long as you are following your regular oral hygiene routine diligently, you do not need to worry about complications with your dental implants. Brushing and flossing your teeth properly will keep bacteria and germs at bay, keeping your teeth and dental implants intact.

Dental Implants Are Not For Older People

It is not the age but the bone tissues that are important for the placement of dental implants. It is true that in older adults, the loss of bone tissues is more, but the healing process is the same as it is in young people. So, irrespective of how old you are, getting a dental implant is not impossible if you have enough bone tissue.
