Menstrual Cup Vs Disc: Expert Lists Pros And Cons For Each Product

For centuries, women have used various methods to manage menstruation, often utilising whatever materials were available. Historical records show a wide range of makeshift solutions, such as fabric strips, wool, and moss. Today, the choice between a menstrual cup and a menstrual disc comes down to personal preference and lifestyle. Both options offer eco-friendly and cost-effective alternatives that can enhance comfort, but each has its own set of advantages and drawbacks. We spoke to our expert Dr Sowmya Raghavan, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Apollo Cradle and Children’s Hospital, Chennai, who shared insights on the same.

Menstrual Cup

“A menstrual cup is a flexible, reusable cup-like device designed to lie below the cervix in the vaginal canal, gathering menstrual blood. Unlike tampons, these cups don't soak up blood, and unlike pads, they don't cause discomfort, stickiness, or itchiness”, said Dr Raghavan.

According to Cureus, a menstrual cup is a non-toxic and non-allergenic silicone device designed to collect menstrual fluids. After insertion, the cup opens into an oval shape and should be positioned between the posterior fornix and the pubic bone, covering the cervix. To remove it, hook a finger over the rim behind the pubic bone.

Here are the pros and cons of a menstrual cup as listed by Dr Raghavan:

Pros Of Menstrual Cup

  • Environmental Impact: One of the main benefits of menstrual cups is their environmental friendliness. Unlike disposable tampons and pads, which generate massive amounts of trash, menstrual cups may be reused for several years with adequate maintenance. This drastically minimises the environmental burden of menstruation products.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: While the initial cost of a menstrual cup may appear larger than that of a box of tampons, the long-term savings are significant. A single menstrual cup can last 5-6 years, eliminating the need for monthly disposable purchases.
  • Convenience: Menstrual cups may be used for up to 12 hours, depending on the flow, offering greater flexibility and convenience than tampons. This makes them excellent for hectic lifestyles or circumstances where access to bathroom facilities may be limited.
  • Health Benefits: Menstrual cups are often composed of medical-grade silicone, which reduces the risk of discomfort and allergic responses common with throwaway goods. Furthermore, the cups help in maintaining the vagina's natural pH balance and lower the risk of infection.

Cons Of Menstrual Cup

  • Learning Curve: For some users, getting used to inserting and removing a menstrual cup can be difficult, particularly in the beginning, resulting in leaks and pain. It may take several rounds to perfect the method.
  • Maintenance: Proper cleaning and maintenance are required to preserve the longevity and hygiene of a menstrual cup. This includes sanitising the cup between cycles and being aware of the cleaning solutions used, as some compounds might deteriorate silicone or rubber over time.

Menstrual Disc

“A menstrual disc is positioned higher in the vaginal canal, just beneath the cervix, which gathers menstrual blood in a bag suspended from a flexible ring crafted from medical-grade polymer. This material adjusts to body temperature, becoming more blendable and conforming to the body's shape”, added Dr Raghavan.

According to a study by BMJ Sexual and Reproductive Health, it was found that menstrual discs had the highest capacity, holding an average of 61 ml of blood among 21 commonly used menstrual products. In contrast, period underwear held only 1 ml. Tampons, pads, and menstrual cups held between 20-50 ml of blood.

Pros Of Menstrual Disc

  • Mess-Free Removal: One of the standout features of menstrual discs is their mess-free removal. Unlike menstrual cups, which require a certain degree of suction, discs can be easily removed by hooking a finger under the rim and pulling it out horizontally, minimising the risk of spillage. Inserting a menstrual disc will become more comfortable.
  • High Capacity: Menstrual discs often have a larger capacity than menstrual cups, making them ideal for people who have heavy periods.

Cons Of Menstrual Disc

  • Limited Availability: Compared to menstrual cups, which have become increasingly mainstream and are available in a wide range of brands and sizes, menstrual discs are still relatively niche and may be more challenging to find in stores. However, they are becoming more accessible through online retailers.
  • Potential for Discomfort: While many users find menstrual discs comfortable to wear, some may feel discomfort owing to their size or form, especially during insertion or removal. Finding the ideal fit may need some trial and error.

Bottomline

Dr Raghavan concluded, “Both menstrual cups and menstrual discs provide practical alternatives to conventional tampons and pads, each presenting distinct advantages and drawbacks. Ultimately, the decision between the two depends on personal inclinations, daily routine, and individual bodily structure. Ultimately, adopting these innovative alternatives empowers women to navigate their menstrual cycles with confidence and convenience.”
