How many types of cancer do you know about? There are more than hundred types of cancer and only a few of them are familiar with people. Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer and is the most common subtype of blood cancer. This cancer affects lymphatic system that not affects the entire body and various crucial functions, thus, proving to be fatal for the patients. Cancer is terrifying but its reach it more alarming. What Is Lymphoma?

According to Dr. Naresh Somani, Director Oncology & Senior Consultant Medical Oncology, HCG Cancer Centre Jaipur, lymphoma is a cancer that targets the immune system of the person by attacking lymphocytes that are infection-fighting cells. As per the data, 50% of the blood cancer cases are lymphomas related to lymphatic system that includes lymph nodes present in the neck, chest, abdomen, armpits, groins, etc. Abnormal lymphocytes when grow can multiply and cluster to form cancerous cells.

Talking about types of blood cancer, there are two types of lymphomas:

  • Hodgkin lymphoma or Hodgkin’s disease: This cancer typically grows in the bone marrow cells or B cells. This disease can be cured if diagnosed early and provided the right aid.
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma: This lymphoma mostly occurs in older adults. This is treatable.

According to Dr. Somani, non-hodgkin lymphoma cancer is more prevalent as compared to Hodgkin lymphoma. This cancer used to be fatal but over time, treatment options have improved making 90% of the cases easily curable. Besides, there are over fifty subtypes of non-hodgkin’s lymphoma and their treatment depends on the types of lymphoma and its growth(slow or aggressive).

What causes Lymphoma?

There can be various causes of lymphoma cancer but the main reason is genetic changes in lymphocytes that can lead to their uncontrolled growth. In addition to this, we would like to shed light to the risk factors of lymphoma cancer. Age certainly plays a role as older adults are found to be more vulnerable to this cancer as compared to younger adults. Additionally, people with immuno-compromised system such as people with HIV/AIDS, autoimmune diseases, etc. are at higher risk of developing this blood cancer type.

Talking about the signs and symptoms of lymphoma, here are some signals that you need to watch out to avert the risk of lymphoma cancer. Here are some:

  • Swelling and pain in lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Persistent fatigue

  • Breathlessness or shortness of breath

Diagnosis and Treatment

How is lymphoma blood cancer diagnosed and treated? If you see these signs and symptoms of lymphoma, you must consult a cancer specialist or oncologist to get tested. There are specific tests that mainly include lymph node biopsy with markers test. Other lymphoma tests include blood tests, CT scan, PET scan, cytogenetic and bone marrow biopsies. These are mainly done to find out the stage of lymphoma.

The treatment method of lymphoma depends on: 

  • Age & general health of the patient
  • Type of the lymphoma cancer
  • Stage of lymphoma cancer

Just like other cancers, the two main treatments for lymphatic cancer are radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The other methods are:

  • Immunotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Stem cell transplant(in extreme cases of lymphoma)

The treatment works by destroying affected lymphoma cancer cells. The treatment includes complete remission of lymphoma that likely damages all the traces of cancer from the body making the disease cure completely.

Tips To Prevent Lymphoma

Prevention is better than cure. This is cent percent true in cancer case. It is not possible to escape any disease if you fall in the risk factors category, however, it is possible to prevent the risk by exercising needful measures. Here are some tips to follow:

  • Avoid unprotected sex with multiple partners to reduce the risk of HIV that is a prominent risk factor of lymphoma cancer
  • Avoid exposing yourself to radiation
  • Eat healthy and keep your immune system strong to prevent damage of lymphocytes

It is possible to prevent and cure lymphoma blood cancer. If you get it, don’t panic and consult a good doctor to get the right treatment. Blood cancer is not fatal if it is handled properly. Just be watchful and stay healthy.
