New study has revealed how a dishwasher could be a breeding ground for harmful fungi like black yeasts which can cause lung infections. The research done by Turkish researchers said that dishwaters with their moist and warm environment are actually a major indoor niche that is harmful for fungal pathogens, according to the New York Daily News.
The researchers for the study went to 177 homes and picked about 900 samples from the dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators, bathtubs, bathroom walls and showerheads.
The researchers found that about 33 per cent of the samples among the tested lot came out to be positive for fungi, among these fungi Exophiala dermatitidis and phaeomuriformis were found to be the common ones. These are two types of black yeast, and dishwaters are most likely they location where they are breeding.
