While our body needs cholesterol for essential functions, such as building cell membranes and producing hormones, too much cholesterol in your blood can increase the risk of heart disease. It's important to be aware of the foods that are highest in cholesterol to make informed dietary choices. 

Many people believe that eating a lot of cholesterol will directly raise their blood cholesterol levels. However, according to the USDA Dietary Guidelines for 2015, there is minimal evidence for a relationship between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol levels.

“The frequency of cholesterol testing is determined by a variety of circumstances, but as a general rule, an individual should get a cholesterol test at least once every five years beginning at the age of 20. Certain conditions, however, may need more regular testing," said Dr Rajesh Bendre, Chief of Lab, Neuberg Diagnostics. 

Egg Yolks

Eggs are one of the most concentrated sources of dietary cholesterol, with egg yolks containing around 186 milligrams of cholesterol per large egg. However, recent research has shown that dietary cholesterol from eggs has less impact on blood cholesterol levels than once thought.

As per research, eating whole eggs may increase heart-protective high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, generally known as "good" cholesterol, rather than raising cholesterol levels.

Organ Meats

Organ meats like liver, kidney, and heart are extremely high in cholesterol. Just 3.5 ounces of beef liver can contain over 300 milligrams of cholesterol.

Shellfish

Seafood such as shrimp, crab, and lobster are known for their cholesterol content. A 3.5-ounce serving of shrimp contains about 195 milligrams of cholesterol.

Full-Fat Dairy

Whole milk, cheese, and butter are rich in cholesterol. Cheese can contain over 100 milligrams of cholesterol per ounce, depending on the type.

Butter

According to the American Heart Association, butter is a dairy product that's high in saturated fat and cholesterol, with one tablespoon containing about 31 milligrams of cholesterol.

Fast Food

Many fast-food items like burgers and fried chicken are prepared with ingredients high in both cholesterol and saturated fats. They contribute to an unhealthy diet when consumed regularly.

Processed Baked Items

Commercial baked goods like pastries, croissants, and muffins often contain high levels of cholesterol due to the use of butter and eggs in baking.

Ice Cream

While delicious, ice cream is another dairy product that's high in both saturated fat and cholesterol. One cup of vanilla ice cream can contain around 61 milligrams of cholesterol.

It's essential to note that dietary cholesterol is not the only factor that affects blood cholesterol levels. Saturated and trans fats, as well as overall dietary patterns, play a significant role in heart health.
