In a LinkedIn post, Kunal Bahl, Co-Founder, Snapdeal and Titan Capital, expressed how he too has not been able to escape the clutches of loneliness, an aspect that is often shared by by highly driven or successful people. Bahl's recent confession sheds light on 'occupational loneliness,' a term explained by Burnout Research published in the journal 'Science Direct.'
The study revealed how for entrepreneurs, owners who often talk to many people, loneliness is more about the lack of being connected with others rather than not having social interactions. In fact, the researchers found that more than half of entrepreneurs and small business owners frequently feel lonely.
It's Lonely At The Top
The study assessing the causes of burnout among entrepreneurs highlights how loneliness could be their way of reacting to the stress of their jobs. This stress could lead to them distancing themselves from others as a way to cope with it. In the short term, this might seem like a good idea for protection – either to protect themselves from criticism or to defend the interests of their employees or shareholders. However, in the long run, it can lead to problems like burnout.

This is in line with Bahl's LinkedIn post where he shared, "There are times in a founder's journey when either they are still early in their venture and nobody knows them or when they are going through a rough patch, and people feel they no longer need to know them."
How To Manage Loneliness?
Citing loneliness as a hidden cost of running a business, the burnout study highlighted the importance of finding ways to prevent or manage loneliness in entrepreneurs to protect them from burnout. This is because, as per another study conducted by researchers from Srinagar's Government Medical College, 'Loneliness can lead to various psychiatric disorders and various physical disorders. Left untended, loneliness can have serious consequences for mental and physical health. '
