Embracing Mental Health: Karan Johar's Candid Revelation with Mental Health Shatters Stigmas

In a heartfelt Instagram post on World Mental Health Day, renowned filmmaker Karan Johar courageously shared his personal battle with anxiety and depression, shedding light on the silent struggles faced by millions around the world. His post, a beacon of hope and understanding, emphasises the importance of acknowledging mental health issues and seeking professional help.

Johar candidly revealed how, despite his successful life, he too found himself grappling with anxiety. "Like many others I felt like 'this cannot happen to me'… But it can and it did," he confessed. He recounted his first encounter with anxiety in 2015-2016, recognising the signs and seeking help from a psychologist. With a combination of medical intervention and lifestyle changes, he managed to overcome his struggles and even successfully weaned off medication.

However, in March of the current year, the challenges resurfaced. Johar promptly recognized the triggers and knew he had to address the situation immediately. His post serves as a reminder that mental health issues are complex and often require professional intervention. Johar emphasised that seemingly simple advice like "go for a drive," "meet friends," or "get a massage" might not be sufficient for someone battling anxiety or depression. Such advice can be a red flag, indicating the need for expert support.

Johar's message to family members and society at large was clear: mental health deserves the same attention as physical health. He highlighted the importance of encouraging individuals facing mental health challenges to seek professional help, just as one would for conditions like blood pressure or diabetes.

Johar's openness not only provides solace to those currently struggling but also empowers them to seek help without fear or shame. To those still hesitant, he offers a glimmer of hope, reminding them that there is a better life waiting—one that begins with reaching out.
