Perfect breasts do not exist, as every breast varies in shape and size. In fact, it is common and normal for an individual to have asymmetrical breasts, where one breast may develop or grow at a different rate than the other. However, the problem occurs when people with large breasts complain of experiencing issues with their posture, which can contribute to back pain and influence one’s sense of comfort. Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Apurva Gupta, Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Daffodils by Artemis, East of Kailash, shares whether or not there is a link between the two and shares ways the issue can be addressed and tackled.

The Link Between Large Breasts And Back Pain

Dr Gupta explains that large breasts can cause strain on the musculoskeletal system due to their weight, leading to discomfort and pain in the upper back, shoulders, and neck.

He adds that this issue is relatively common among women with larger breasts, with many reporting chronic pain. He says that the weight pulls the upper body forward, disrupting natural posture and leading to muscle tension and fatigue.

A 2013 study published in the journal Chiropractic and Manual Therapies found a strong correlation between larger breast size, higher body weight, and upper back pain, particularly in the middle back area, in postmenopausal women. Surprisingly, posture did not contribute to the pain. While many women had poorly fitting bras, this was not linked to pain levels, suggesting that the increased weight of larger breasts on the upper body might be a key factor in causing back pain.

Dr Gupta further explains that heavy breasts pull the shoulders forward and down, leading to a hunched posture. This unnatural alignment puts excessive stress on the upper back muscles and spine, resulting in muscle fatigue, tension, and pain. Over time, this can cause chronic pain and other musculoskeletal issues.

Is Breast Reduction Surgery An Option?

According to Dr Gupta, breast reduction surgery is a viable option for relieving upper back pain caused by large breasts. It involves removing excess breast tissue and reshaping the breasts to a smaller size.

However, before considering the surgery, here are a few things to consider:

  • The potential risks and complications
  • Recovery time
  • The impact on breastfeeding and sensation

“Outcomes generally include significant pain relief, improved posture, and enhanced quality of life, with many women reporting great outcomes with the results,” says the expert.

Non-Surgical Ways To Alleviate Back Pain - Lifestyle Changes And Exercise

Non-surgical methods to alleviate upper back pain related to large breasts include:

  • Wearing a properly fitted, supportive bra to distribute weight more evenly
  • Physical therapy to strengthen the back and shoulder muscles
  • Regular exercise, especially core and upper back strengthening routines
  • Pain relief options like Over-the-Counter (OTC) pain medications
  • Hot/cold therapy and massage

When it comes to relieving back pain, Dr Gupta recommends strengthening exercises for the back, shoulders, and core, which can improve posture and support the spine.

“Activities like yoga and Pilates can enhance flexibility and muscle tone. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces overall strain on the body. Using ergonomic furniture and practicing good posture can also help prevent pain. Most importantly, regularly wearing a supportive bra is crucial, as it helps in evenly distributing the weight and maintaining good posture,” he recommends.
