Is Rice Water the Cheapest Hair Growth Tonic? Benefits And Risks Explained

In the hair care world, products that claim to make your locks long, healthy, and lush are costly. What if we tell you that the key to stronger, shinier, and potentially faster-growing hair was already in your kitchen? Well, rice water is a centuries-old beauty remedy that's making a strong comeback, especially among natural beauty enthusiasts and budget-conscious consumers. But does this DIY tonic really work, and is it safe for all hair types?

We decided to get in touch with our expert, Dr Sanjeev Gulati, Department of Dermatology, Sharda Hospital - Noida, to uncover the truth behind this ancient elixir. Here is what he shared with us.

What Is Rice Water?

Rice water is starchy liquid remaining after boiling or soaking rice. Rich in amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, it's been utilised in East and Southeast Asia cultures for ages, particularly in China and Japan.

What makes Rice Water a Promising Hair Growth Tonic?

Dr Gulati explained that rice water has various nutrients that can potentially aid hair, such as:

  • Amino acids: Strengthen hair strands.
  • Inositol: A carbohydrate that is thought to mend and strengthen hair from damage.
  • Vitamin E, B vitamins, and minerals: Condition the scalp and enhance hair texture.

Advantages Of Rice Water For Hair

A few critically acclaimed benefits of using rice water for better hair and scalp health are:

  • Better hair elasticity and strength
  • Smother, glossier strands
  • Less friction and breakage

How to make Rice Water at Home

Here's an easy, expert-approved way to make rice water at home:

  • Rinse your hair half a cup of white, brown, jasmine, or basmati rice. This will help to get rid of impurities.
  • Soak in two to three cups of water for 30 minutes or up to 24 hours.
  • Drain the rice, keeping the water.
  • (Optional) Ferment the rice water by leaving it in a closed container at room temperature for 24–48 hours, then chill.

How to Use Rice Water On Hair

  • After shampooing, pour the rice water on your hair.
  • Massage into scalp.
  • Leave on for 10–20 minutes.
  • Rinse well with plain water.
  • Use one to two times a week for optimal results.

Is Rice Water Really Effective for Hair Growth?

Scientific studies of rice water's impact on hair growth are few and far between. A 2020 study conducted by the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, however, reiterated that inositol (found in rice water) is able to penetrate damaged hair and stay inside, which provides long-term protection.

Nevertheless, though it won't work magic, its low price and all-natural ingredients make it a compelling substitute or complement to store-bought products.

Risks and Side Effects of Using Rice Water on Hair

Despite being well-liked, rice water isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Here's what to keep in mind:

Protein Overload

Rice water is protein-rich, and overuse can cause dryness and brittleness — particularly in low-porosity or protein-sensitive hair.

Scalp Buildup

Poor rinsing can lead to buildup of residue, clogging follicles and possibly slowing growth.

Fermentation Risks

Over-fermented rice water may be pungent-smelling and could irritate the scalp or aggravate dandruff in sensitive scalps.

Is Rice Water the Most Budget-Friendly Hair Growth Tonic?

“Absolutely, for pennies per application, rice water is perhaps the cheapest DIY hair treatment around. In comparison to serums or supplements which are pocket heavy, rice water presents a budget-friendly starting point for those wanting to achieve healthier hair the natural way,” Dr Gulati concluded.

Bottomline

Rice water is not a miracle treatment, but it is a soft, nutrient-dense rinse that could enhance the appearance and feel of your hair with regular use. With any beauty solution, results are mixed and moderation is the key. If you're willing to try and be careful, it might just be the hair tonic your wallet and locks need.
