Skincare has no gender. Everyone, irrespective of what they identify as, should take care of their skin. Unlike older times when women were the sole targets of big beauty and skincare brands, it is no longer the norm. Times have changed and men too have now started to invest in their skin health. They understand the value of taking care of their skin and the benefits of looking young, fresh and rejuvenated. However, the male and the female skin may be different in certain aspects. But should that impact the choice of skincare products in men and women? In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Ishan Sardesaj, ENT and Aesthetic Surgeon, New Delhi, helps us with answers.
Are Men And Women’s Skin Different?
“The main difference between men and women’s skin is the presence of facial hair in men,” said Dr Sardesaj, adding that the facial hair (beard and moustache) needs to be frequently groomed either by trimming or shaving. According to him, this can lead to increased skin sensitivity and possible red bumps known as razor bumps. “For those prone to developing such issues, switching from a shaving blade to an electric trimmer is a good option. Pre and post-shave moisturisation can also help.” In addition, the doctor advised to avoid active ingredients, such as retinol or exfoliating acids on the day of and a day after shaving. “If razor bumps do develop, then a soothing aloe vera gel can be applied to reduce the irritation and inflammation,” she shared.
Research has also found other differences in male and female skin. A study published in the International Journal of Women's Dermatology, concluded, “Skin pigmentation and thickness are significantly higher, facial wrinkles are deeper, and facial sagging is more prominent in the lower eyelids of men, but there is no significant difference in skin elasticity between the sexes."
What Is An Ideal Skincare Routine?
According to Dr Sardesaj, a simple, sustainable skin care routine is essential. “The basic elements of a good skincare routine consists of daily face-wash and use of moisturiser, twice a day, along with a 9am-2pm sunscreen routine for both men and women,” he added.

Do Skincare Products Differ For Men And Women?
Depending on the skin concern, certain actives (in the form of creams or serums) can be added. An 'active' is an ingredient in a product that addresses a skin concern it's meant to target. These include salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for oily and acne prone skin; kojic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid can be used by people who suffer from pigmentation. For post-acne scars or blemishes, azelaic acid is very effective, said Dr Sardesaj. When it comes to fine lines, he further added that for wrinkles and overall texture improvement, retinol is an amazing solution.
As per the doctor, these skin care products can be used by both men and women to improve their skin health and maintain good skin.
Takeaway
Our skin is the largest organ in the body and we must learn to protect it. Skin quality may vary in men and women in terms of thickness, facial hair, and wrinkles, but that does not make a lot of difference when it comes to choosing skincare products.
