In a recent Instagram Live session, Dr Anjali Kumar (aka Maitriwoman), MBBS, MD - Gynecologist and Obstetrician shared a few valuable insights when one of her followers asked, "Is a slight odour in your vaginal discharge okay?" But first let’s understand what are the causes of vaginal odour.
What Causes Vaginal Odour?
A variety of factors can influence the scent of vaginal discharge, including hormone levels, diet, hygiene, and even physical activity. A mild odour, particularly during menstruation, is common due to fluctuations in hormone levels.
The vagina also has a unique microbiome, mainly consisting of Lactobacillus bacteria, which help maintain a slightly acidic environment and protect against infections. Minor changes in odour often result from harmless shifts in this microbiome.

Studies indicate that as long as the odour is mild and doesn’t come with other symptoms like itching, burning, or unusual discharge colour, it is typically not a cause for concern. A study published in Science Direct points out that normal vaginal pH and bacterial balance contribute to a naturally faint scent in discharge that varies throughout the menstrual cycle source.
A normal vaginal pH (3.8-4.5) and the presence of beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria help maintain a healthy balance, resulting in a faint, natural scent that can vary slightly with hormonal shifts throughout the menstrual cycle. This acidic environment protects against infections and supports vaginal health.
When to Be Concerned About Vaginal Odour
"Any kind of weird, smelly vaginal odour is not okay. If the odour becomes stronger, fishy, or foul-smelling, it may indicate Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) or other infections," Dr Kumar shared. BV is characterised by an imbalance in the normal bacteria of the vagina and often comes with a noticeable fishy odour.
