What Is Leg Amputation
In one of our previous articles, leg amputation is described as the surgical removal of part or all of a lower limb, often the foot, part of the leg, or entire leg, when the limb can no longer be saved due to trauma, chronic injury, infection, or severe vascular problems. -1745841625573.jpg)
According to Dr Lahari Surapaneni, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, CEO of Bangalore Hospitals, the procedure “typically involves removing bone along with non-viable soft tissue below a certain level of the leg. It can be above the knee, below the knee, above the ankle — depending on where the damage is worst.” The goal is “to remove diseased or dead tissue and prevent further systemic infection, while preserving as much limb length as possible to allow for a functional stump.”
Dr Surapaneni emphasises that a well-formed stump is crucial: “Surgical techniques focus heavily on ensuring a stable, well-vascularized, and pain-free stump which can later be fitted with a prosthesis, helping the patient regain mobility and a good quality of life.” A poorly planned amputation or poorly healed stump may result in complications, including infection, poor healing, or poor prosthetic fit.
In Ruth Codd’s case, her decision for a second below-knee amputation came after many years of failed surgeries, chronic nerve and joint damage, and even toe amputations. This underlines how, sometimes, when conservative treatments no longer reduce pain or restore function, amputation can become a necessary step toward a better quality of life.
