According to a new study, conducted by the German Institute of Human Nutrition, intermittent fasting enhances the sensitivity to the blood sugar-lowering hormone insulin and also prevents the chances of fatty liver. This research was authored in the journal Metabolism.
What is fatty liver?
Excess fat accumulated on the liver and pancreas is called the fatty liver. It has been examined as one of the well-known constantly occurring ailment.
Fatty liver to type-2 diabetes
Very few people know this fact that fatty liver is one of the lead causes of type-2 diabetes. The accumulation of fat cells on the liver causes this fatal disease. Earlier, it was said that type-2 diabetes is due to
- excess weight
Prof Schürmann, speaker of the German Center for Diabetes Research said that fat aggregation outside the liver, bones or muscles, is a hazard on these organs and it also affects the body. However, diabetes is directly linked to the pancreas, but in this study, no link with the fatty pancreas has been shown till now.
For the research, the team segregates obese animals into two groups. (These animals were likely to have high sugar levels).
The first group was told to eat without any obstructions, which means
- as much as they can,
- at any time and at any part of the day
The second group was asked to follow an intermittent fasting diet plan.
On the first day, the rodents (rabbit, vermin, guinea pig) got unlimited food, but on the second day, they starved for chow.
After 35 days (five weeks), the scientists discovered the variations in the pancreas of the rodents with fat cells being aggregated in the group who had no obstructions for food (unlimited food). Vice-versa to this, the animals of the other group had no fatty-cells on the pancreas.
Prof Schulz, head of the department of adipocyte development and nutrition at the Research Centre stated that, under severe conditions of heredity, the aggregation of fat on the pancreas may play a massive role in the growth of type-2 diabetes.
The informative data from the research has found another technique to prevent type-2 diabetes. The study has presented another method to reduce fatty liver (which is the ultimate cause of type-2 diabetes). Intermittent fasting could be used as alternate prevention to type-2 diabetes in the future, but this is not only the solution to prevent the ailment.
